Los Cristianos

The south of the island is home to mass-market tourism so don't expect to be smothered in culture, you need to head north for that. However, if you want to avoid the worst of the bucket-and-spade mob and boozing crowds then Los Cristianos is the quieter neighbour of Playa de las Americas and a little more subdued. It's hard to tell where one starts and the other stops but once you're in the middle of each, there is a distinct difference, especially by night!

Los Cristianos has a bit of history. Prior to undergoing major development and becoming a booming tourist resort, Los Cristianos was a small fishing village. It has an old town centre with Catholic church, stretching from the port up to the main shopping street Avenida de Suecia. The centre is entirely pedestrianised and has more typical Canarian architecture complete with typical Canarians living there.

The port has a mixture of small fishing boats and more modern, larger cruisers with several yachts scattered around too. It is from Los Cristianos' port that the ferry and hydrofoil depart daily to the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Los Cristianos has two beaches and a pleasant promenade along their edge, lots of nice touristy cafes, restaurants and bars with a lot more (nicer ones) to choose from along the pedestrianised streets leading up to the town's square.
