Santa Barbara Castle

Castle from the outside
Castle from the inside

High up on top of the Guanapay mountain overlooking Teguise, the Castle of Santa Barbara is now a museum. Built as a watch tower in the 16th century by Sancho de Herrera, it was an ideal location to look out over both east and west coasts of the island. In 1588 reinforced the castle with spyholes, turrets, and moats, making it a real fortress.

After the initial growth, the castle was left to ruin until 1960 when a group called "Friends of the Castles" began restoration . A subsequent restoration was carried out in 1977 by the Fine Arts Association.
