Hi All,
Can somebody advise me WHY the San Miguel, it's on the ground floor 3/4 of the way down on the left I think, gets such a good recommendation. I have sat in Bar Cactus and looked down to see a queue at most times.
Have eaten in there just the once, very, very disapointing to say the least.
Do they have a tie up with a hotel, tour operator or apartment block?
Best regards,
Bryan and Chris

I am not sure that cheap is the answer. Most places in PR are cheap, so again, why do people head straight for this place and then queue for a long time. Its not that the view is great or best wine list on the island.
What is it guys, somebody out there knows the truth.

Went there last night - as a veggie I was really disappointed. The only vegetarian main course was spaghetti with spicy tomato sauce. I ended up with one of the only 2 vegetarian starters as a main course (they were really good about this and did make me a bigger portion and to their credit it was lovely (deep fried cheese and salad if you are interested))
But the meat eater with me said that the smoked sirloin steak was the best meal he had ever eaten on the island....high praise indeed.
The restaurant was packed to the rafters and everyone else looked to have some lovely meals.
The menu was not extensive but featured more unusual stuff than most of the restaurants we have tried in Rico.
So 10/10 from the meat eater however for me Ciao Ciao remains my favourite and as its our last night in Rico tonight:sadguy: until 25th of march that is where we will be heading!!

Just back last night, had a sneak preview of additions to the menu coming soon, think you will find more on offer. Have to agree about the fillet steaks, really fab. Spent New Years Eve there, great atmosphere.
As you like Ciao Ciao, give Bistro Salsa a look when you are at Amadores, really good menu, far different from the run of the mill beach places.

Went to don quiote last night under Puerto novo apartments, was the best meal out I'v had in a long time, two chefs with me and they were very impressed, Oscars was also good, don't know what the fuss is about San Miguel, ok but as amazed people actually queue to get in, new years eve there was a huge queue, they then placed a sign outside saying 20% extra on all meals for that night and people scarpered in all directions, so obviously it must be cheap

Hi,
No 1.......has to be Henry's on Avenida Lanzarote, half way up the hill on the left if you're walking down to the beach from the commercial centre. Reservations usually required as it gets busy, scandinavian run, food out of this world, service excellent.
No 2.......Christina's in C.C., up the first lot of steps at the front of the centre then left round into the corner. Great Canarian food, family run, friendly staff. Again, you usually need to make a reservation. Well worth a visit.
No 3........Best Chinese.. Across the road from the C.C., half way up, I think it's called the Golden Dragon, not sure, but lovely food.
No 4.......Best Indian... Happy Valley, C.C., near the Black n White Piano bar (where you have a good old singalong with David on the piano, but make sure you don't put you're handbag/jacket on the piano, cause he hates that and throws it on the floor - he's great!)
No 5...... For a good old British breakfast try the Royal Oak, C.C., have the Royal Special breakfast, it'll set you up for the day.
These are my choices and obviously only in my opinion. But if you do decide to try any of the above, I'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Happy Eating!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I forgot to mention 'Roberto's' which used to be 'Oasis' up until Mid November, But I've just posted my comments all about it on the other thread headed 'Oasis'. Must be one of the best meals we've had, wonderful king prawn platter main course, he made us sea bass baked in salt which was absolutely delicious. Do try Roberto's if you can.

Sorry, I stand corrected, it wasn't the Sabidan, I've just remebered it was the other place at the front of the C.C. (on the same level as the top of the first steps, along from Royal Oak) on the righthand side right next to the stairs, not nice! But we've had lots of takeaway stuff from Sabidan, excellent cooked chicken!!!! yum, yum!

San Miguels really was a worth of visiting. And as a person from the cold, dark north :p I'd say that not only the cheap prices and the good menu, but also the fact that there isn't there a huge guy outside the restaurant trying to force you in, is an interesting exception in the shopping center.. ;)
But actually I have a request. I need to get contact to the restaurant, so does anyone know any of the employees, the adress/e-mail or something..
thanks!

I was in Puerto Rico for 2 weeks last month and spent 4 or 5 nights eating in Churchills. The menu is varied, and particularly suits a large family like ours (we have 5 children!!!) - the portions range from baby portions to huge "belly buster" portions, which my husband thought was great!!
the staff were all very efficient and especially good with the kids. lovely clean restaurant, with a friendly atmosphere. Good value for money too - would recommend anyone to try churchills if theyre planning to go to puerto rico..

5. Churchils (only for the Salad's, the rest is very over priced poor quality)
Cant understand why anyone would think the quality is poor - ive eaten there everytime Ive visited puerto rico, and normally more than once in my holiday, and have never had a bad meal. As for over priced, the menu is slightly more expensive than other restaurants nearby but the portion sizes more than make up for this - some of the other restaurants weve tried in puerto rico have been cheaper but it shows in the quality of both the food and the restaurant itself - i.e staff etc
i would recommend churchills especially for families and for those who love a good roast dinner...definitely the best sunday roast in puerto rico!

Hi
we have eaten in churchills ourselves a few times but do not like to tie ourselves to one restaraunt as there are so many good ones churchills included.
any time we have used it though it has always been busy so that speaks volumes itself. you will never ever please everyone and there are always the few that will knock a place whether good or bad

one word "cheap"
Had to try this one because of the queues and found it absolutely average. When I asked the waiter why there were always queues, he said they did deals with reps to offer discounts rather than pay someone to stand outside, so maybe we all just like to think we're getting a bargain.
There are so many good value places that I couldn't choose a favourite.I probably couldn't remember their names anyway!

Bonanza Steak House : Great sized portions, just right.
Yeah we all like to get a great big portion but it gets wasted cos you're too full so whats the point in that. This place is the only restaurant I could go and finish what was on my plate it was just a nice size and the food was great and the staff are lovely.

The La Paloma menu is about the same price as Oscars and other better quality restaurants. A meal for 2 with a bottle of house wine and a couple of beers and coffee is about €75. Restaurants in the centres advertise things like half chicken and chips for about €8, but they sometimes make up for it with high sweets and drinks prices.

Plenty of fast food outlets, pizza places etc. Macdonalds near the main CC. Afraid I`m not an expert on them, part of our holiday is spending most of the evenings enjoying good restaurants. Round by the PR beach meals are advertised at very reasonable prices, places like Fat Cats do steaks for less than €10 and pints at 2 for €3. Sure you will find places very reasonable.

I can agree totally with "liam's" list of the above places to eat! a perfect sellection and worth the taxi ride out to find some of them.
There are a few reasonable restaurants in the commercial centres, but take "Liam's" advice and forget the commercial centres, head out and explore them for yourselves.

Just returned last Saturday from an excellent two week holiday to PR.
We discovered some new restaurants this time aswell as going to our old favourites, here are where we went and they are in order of rating:
1. Guantanamo (3 visits) - Location Playa Tauro €3 in a taxi from PR
2. = La Paloma (1 visit) - Next door but one to Oscars on PR Beach Old Marina Side
2. = Bistro Frere (2 visits) - Europa Centre - 1st Floor, more or less next door to the Irish Cottage
2. = Rhodos Palace (2 visits) - 1st Floor over shops to the left side of Oscars.
5. Balcon Canaria (1 visit) - Commercial Centre Ground Floor turn right at Miami Restaurant.
6. Pizzeria Clan (1 visit) - Next door to Rhodos Palace above.
7. Il Pirata (1 visit) - on opposite side of beach to oscars near the Spar down by the beach.
8. Henrys (1 visit) - Close to Spar at the beach but up two levels, You'll see the green steps that go over the old road to Arguinegin from the Spar. Follow the steps they lead to Henry's
9. El Brassero (1 visit) - Europa Centre front, next to Irish Cottage
To be fair, the only two places that were dissappointing were Henry's and El Brassero, however, I am aware that Henry's has a very good reputation and perhaps they had an off night!
Why is Guantanamo still tops? Well wev'e been going there for over ten years and we are welcomed like old friends (amigos) every time we turn up without a reservation on our first night. The staff are freindly, the ambience is always good, the food is consistently excellent and its very reasonably priced.
La Paloma came a very close second, slightly more expensive than Guantanamo but our meal there was first class and we would definitely recommend here.
Bistro Frere always serves great food, good portions with fresh vegetables and can be recommended heartily.
Lastly, the real find of the holiday was the Rhodos Place, excellent and authentic Greek cuisine, good service and again very reasonably priced, if you like Greek food this is highly recommended, if you think you don't like Greek food why not try the Fried Courgettes and Mixed Meat Grill, you won't go far wrong with this combination!

It used to be called El Greko - Don't know where it used to be, but I seem to remember it got good reviews previously ( pre hack)

YES!, YES!, YES!...is all I can say about Caracola.....
It is quite simply an amazing food experience....Dieter and Chris are the most passionate 'foodies' I have ever met....the athmosphere is fab, however just a couple of things to note
1 They only serve fish.....but have 90 dishes on the menu
2 Everything is done fresh and they only have one sitting per night.....so dinner can take about 3 hours
3 A 3 course 'set' is about €65, whilst individual mains are around €30-45
4 You MUST book.....indeed before you leave IRE/UK as during the winter months there is NO chance of a table on 'SPEC'
5 Be prepared for a bill for two of about €250 (lots of wine), however when you get over that shock...on the night just sit back and enjoy an amazing experience....tell the grandchildren!
6 They are closed from around the 15th May until the first week in september

Now we live in the Puerto Rico area we are hunting down nice restaurants. This thread is great as it sends me into restaurants i wouldnt necessarily try.
Last night we went to the Passarella centre - centre near big red where the new Oscars is.
Oscar menu looks lovely - bit more pricey than others but nice posistion
Rhodos Palace - greek restaurant - lovely food, meal great. Makes a change from steak or pizza.
New restaurant has opened at the end of the centre - the glass circular bit. Pasta pizza type things. Good prices and a nice spot overlooking the harbour.

No I havent been - I have heard of it and i notice that you mentioned the fishermans co op in Arguineguin, in one of your posts. I thought they were the same place, but obviously not.
I'll try and hunt it down. I have to be careful though otherwise I'll be the size of a house!!!

Those are well worth a visit Mary, but not heard many talking abut La Taberna, in the Timanfeya apts. also fantastic......tucked away up past the post office, close to the Revoli and Maracaibo, not too far to go if you are in Puerto Rico.

Yo MacTaliy.....That's where Mrs KT and myself were on a few occasions over the last two weeks...La Taverna Restaurant...excellent.
That last night we came up to see you, we had just left La Taverna. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Puerto Rico. We were back on Friday and Saturday too....cannot wait to return...possibly Nov.

LOS CANARIAS IN ARGUINEGIN
ACAYMO MOGAN PUEBLO
GUANTANAMO TAURO
are all owned by one canarian family
I like the arguinegin one best but it was hard to find its in the urbanisation on the left hand side somewhere at the back of the police station. A taxi driver will tell you how to get there.

If its the one right out of the way where you go to to catch the ferry ,all on its own behind the gates. Well that one gets my vote for Fresh tuna anyday.Absolutely delicious lovely food lovely staff and very cheap as well.

Now come on you all know the old saying (when in rome do as the romans do) Weve all had a macdonalds in our lives,
Now try PEPI CHIRINGOS the spanish macdonalds.
I did ,starving one day up leroy merlins for some do it yourself stuff,
the usual quick snack place was shut the other eating place round there was chock full, desparate for a drink also, we tried the CARNE CON PAPAS,
well never such a big platefull in all my life and so cheap, now i believe one has opened up in Puerto Rico ,And all at spanish workers prices as well. I believe so im told that it is a small outfit just started up on this island by a canarian family, NO FRANCHISES YET IM AFRAID ha ha. Just across from leroy merlin and in puerto rico as yet. The meat is definately tasting something different. Delicious! so whenever we have to go up there for anything its Pepi Chiringos for us.

Have to agree with you Shirley, a very cheap and satisfying place to grab a snack or late night equivelant of doner kebab type food !! These outlets can be found all over the island, and yes there is one in P.Rico up at the back of the main commercial centre on the road side, past the taxi rank.
A favourite of mine is Pepitos normal, a type of spiced beef thinly sliced served in a bread roll, delicious covered in Alioli and Tobasco. You can also grab a can of beer to wash it down with, excellent !!!!!!!

Oh Good ! somebody agrees with me. ha ha
Have you tried the fish tony ? is that good?
Its good that they are in pr now as that will keep the prices down cos the coffee and water is cheap as well ,if thats all you want sometimes,
when you reckon up on just water and coffees that we need to have as essentials going about seeing things on this island (bet i have spent a small fortune) and that place will be very good for people with lots of children to keep supplied everyday on holiday, as it is mothers holiday(supposed to be) as well no cooking and so on.Well thats what i think anyway.:thankyou:

There are Pepe Chiringos all over the place around Las Palmas. One on the beach at Las Canteras - good for a bags of chips and a kebab when sunbathing

Thanks Mary,
I didnt know that (i wonder if it is true what i was told then,?) Perhaps there are Franchises to be had after all Ha ha.
They seem to do very well, I dont mind paying for a decent real coffee
but the price some places charge for some coffees that only taste like a cheap instant one well! One gets fed up ,so id sooner pay Pepi Chiringos prices for one,(if i only need a quick cuppa) somewhere on the run. Not that there is anything wrong with the coffee there its ok.

Just been past the pepe chiringos in PR - 3.20 euros for meat and potatoes. 1.20 for a drink. Good prices for lunch or evening meal if you are on a budget

Can anyone help? Me and my boyfriend went to Puerto Rico last last year in March and we loved it. We ate in a restaurant 5 nights out of the 7 we were there. We have been trying to remember the name of it ever since but have had no joy. All we can remember is that it was part of a hotel and there was a tappas restaurant (also part of the hotel) opposite it. It was in a courtyard and they cooked fish outside on a big grill. Please help I know my information is vague. I also think it was near Oscars. Thanks.
