What is a proper airline?
The airline carried 60.2m passengers in the 12 months to the end of June and said it was “on course” to increase its passenger numbers in the current financial year to March 2010 to 67m from 58m last year.
60.2 million "MUGS" How does that compare with your proper airline?
The budget airline, Europe's largest, reported a 5% drop in full year net profit to €226.6m before goodwill and exceptional items, beating forecasts of €195m to €218m.
How much profit does your proper airline make?
The 173 aircraft (Europes biggest airline) have an average age of 2.7 years. How does this compare with your proper airline?
Do you think the long-suffering businesses in Gran Canaria will see Ryanair as an improper airline?

whatever way you look at it this has to be good news for the canaries and may also force other airlines to lower prices.
now I must point out that glasgow prestwick airport is actually in ayshire 31 miles south of glasgow why it is still passed as glasgow I'll never know so anyone booking a flight to glasgow will have to catch the airport train or bus back up to glasgow city roughly 30 minutes away which can often end up costing more than the flight.
as for ryanair they are a little like marmite you either love them or hate them but the thing is they are here to stay and to be honest at edinburgh I have been charting their progress ever since they have extended all their routes here big time and their success has just been fantastic to date. I often see them landing disenbarking passengers and the new passengers on board and pushed back and in the air again within 20-25 minutes.

I can remember occasions during my working life in which a fellow worker would show me his payslip and complain about the amount deducted from his gross pay. My standard reply was, just look at the right-hand bottom corner (take home pay) and ignore the remainder. It will only frustrate you.
The same applies to baggage charges etc. When I book a flight with easyjet/ryanair (and most other airlines now), I book what I require, but only what I require (I can choose) When I see the final figure, I can decide to book it or go elsewhere. The final figure is the only figure that matters. How it is made up is of no interest to me.

what i mean i by a proper airline is one that doesn't leave your luggage at the airport because it could't carry the weight. I look forward to the horror stories on the fourm over the next year.
""Mr O'Leary's policy on customer refunds was pithily expressed to a gentleman from the Financial Times last June: "We don't fall over ourselves if they say 'my granny fell ill'. What part of no refund don't you understand? You're not getting a refund so **** off.""" quote from the Times. Charming...have a nice flight

What part of no refund don't you understand? You're not getting a refund so **** off.""" quote from the Times. Charming...have a nice flight
Have used Ryanair for about 30 flights to date, I never a problem, except on one occasion, the flight departed a little after the scheduled time. I do not know of anyone personally that were dissatisfied with their service, very minor grievances apart.
Are 100% of Ryanair customers satisfied? of course not. When they carry 62 million passengers in 12 months, problems are bound to arise. Look at what happens to all airlines if an airport is closed for just 1 hour...chaos....there are enough planes to carry all the passengers, but the planes are in the wrong places.
I travelled with Iberia on 10 occasions, my baggage did not arrive with me on 3 of those occasions....no problem, I am insured. Would I travel with Iberia again? Of course I would. In every other respect, they were a good airline
I will agree that Mr O'Leary's language is rather colourful, that he differs from most CEO's in that respect. He doesn't suffer fools gladly. If we book an economy flight with almost any airline, we must tick a box indicating that we have read the Terms and Conditions. Most of us just tick it without reading it. The terms and conditions clearly state, no refunds. Just get travel insurance for when granny falls ill, and travel cannot take place as a result.
Last time I travelled with Ryanair, I was seated beside a middle aged lady at the departure lounge. The names she called Mr O'Leary could not be repeated here. I asked her why she was so annoyed with the Ryanair service. She told me she was charged an additional 120 pounds for excess baggage. I felt sorry for her. I saw her later at the arrivals baggage claim area, with her 3 heavy cases. She choose to ignore the rules and paid the price. My sympathy for her quickly evaporated. We hear the horror stories, but we often do not hear the full story. There are of course passengers with genuine complaints also that have not been properly addressed, but this problem is not confined to Ryanair.
It is your right to travel with the airline you are happiest with and I wish you "Bon Voyage" with whoever you choose, but to call us "Mugs" for choosing Ryanair, is uncalled for. Like you, we too have a right to choose who we travel with.
I think that all airlines and airport workers do a very good job in very difficult circumstances. The number of times they get it right always amazes me. I have great admiration for everyone connected with this wonderful form of travel.
I look forward to many more visits to wonderful Gran Canaria with Ryanair.

Agree, I too hate flying through the night. Think the vast majority of the flights are daytime flights, but that is of little comfort to you if your local airport flights are during the night.

i'll be over a bit more often to lanzarote, especially for long weekends...
good new for us in glasgow side anyways, whether it be prestwick or glasgow international..
easier to park at prestwick and road is nowhere near as congested as the kingston bridge side of things..last week accident on bridge took 2 hours to clear..all it was was a bump..not fatal or anybody hurt..just a bump..taraffic was backed up to easterhouse...because traffic at standstill...more cars were breaking down cos the engines were overheating...it was a nightmare ...

as ever theese are 'cost of ownership' issues.........
when making decisions, sit back and evaluate the total possible/probable cost of travel including the various decisions you have made (ie 10 bags etc).......and then decide to book....thereafter LIVE WITH YOUR DECISION.......personally, I wouldnt travel with them...but, thats my choice.....as earlier stated....READ THE TERMS and if happy proceed , if not, go elsewhere....

Well i'm pleased they are flying there because as i said ..it's a bit of competiton that will hopefully bring prices down. I wouldn't fly with them ..my choice.. i just think their customer service stinks. Their attitude to customers stink. There web site is a nightmare with so many add ons.. Good luck to people who fly with them.. My personal choice would be to pay an extra £20/£30 for a better service . All airlines have problems, but Ryanair are not voted the worst airline time and again for nothing.. Simply you get what you pay for..
""
Ryanair has been criticised for many aspects of its customer service. The Economist (http://www.canaryforum.com/wiki/The_Economist) newspaper wrote that Ryanair's "cavalier treatment of passengers" had given Ryanair "a deserved reputation for nastiness" and that the airline "has become a byword for appalling customer service ... and jeering rudeness towards anyone or anything that gets in its way".[46] (http://www.canaryforum.com/forums/#cite_note-45) In 2002, the High Court in Dublin awarded Jane O'Keefe €67,500 damages and her costs after Ryanair reneged on a free travel prize she was awarded for being the airline's 1 millionth passenger.[47] (http://www.canaryforum.com/forums/#cite_note-46)
The airline has come under heavy criticism in the past, for its poor treatment of disabled passengers. In 2002, it refused to provide wheelchairs (http://www.canaryforum.com/wiki/Wheelchair) for disabled passengers at London Stansted Airport (http://www.canaryforum.com/wiki/London_Stansted_Airport), greatly angering disabled rights groups.[48] (http://www.canaryforum.com/forums/#cite_note-47) The airline argued that this provision was the responsibility of the airport authority, stating that wheelchairs were provided by 80 of the 84 Ryanair destination airports,[49] (http://www.canaryforum.com/forums/#cite_note-48) at that time. A court ruling in 2004 judged that the responsibility should be shared by the airline and the airport owners;[50] (http://www.canaryforum.com/forums/#cite_note-49) Ryanair responded by adding a surcharge of 0.50 to all its flight prices.
Ryanair does not offer customers the possibility of contacting them by email or webform (http://www.canaryforum.com/wiki/Form_(web)), only through a premium rate phone line, by fax or by post. An Early day motion (http://www.canaryforum.com/wiki/Early_day_motion) in the British Parliament put forward in 2006 criticised Ryanair for this reason and called on the company to provide customers with a means to contact the company by e-mail.[51] (http://www.canaryforum.com/forums/#cite_note-50) Some people[who? (http://www.canaryforum.com/wiki/Wikipedia:Avoid_weasel_words)] claim that Ryanair is therefore flouting UK E-commerce Regulations, which state that the email address of the service provider must be given."""

Prestwick is only 30 mins by car from Kingston Bridge...not much more than to Glasgow from the East. Also has its own rail station with off peak return to Glasgow £12.80. I would fly from there anytime. As for Ryanair,if it gets me there safely, and I've got a seat, and there's a toilet, that's fine by me! Don't need fed or watered! As although it was a long time ago I do remember from school that "Prestwick is the most fog free airport in Britain."

yes have to agree with sunshine girl there we have used ryanair from prestwick although not to gran canaria. my only fault at that time was when ordering a drink instead of being in a small bottle it was in a shampoo like satchet lol it all went over me.
from the east if driving it is around 15-20minutes more to prestwick for us than what it takes to glasgow airport and can sometimes be done in the same time by using fenwick moor as a shortcut when there are roadworks by the motorway at kingston bridge area. as I said before ryanair are like marmite but!!!! what would you do in a desert if you had been without food or drink for a week and only had marmite, enough said. me I would sit on the rear of a witches broom to reach pr. lol when we going diane. oops she will kill me with that broom for those comments ha ha ha!!!!

You're really hammering your point home.
It's a budget airline. That means no frills, cramped seating, crappy staff and crappy service. People don't care if it means they can afford a better holiday for themselves and their family. Far from holidaying in a garden shed, they're willing to accept a budget airline if they can spend more money on the things that actually matter, like a better hotel or more spending money.
For a two week vacation equalling 336 hours it's pretty easy to see why people are willing to scrimp on 8 or 9 hours of traveling.

Top and bottom of it all is Ryanair tends to do what it says on the tin . Its a cheap alternative to the bigger names . I ve flown with Jet2,Easyjet,Flythomascook and Ryanair were any of them better than the others probably not; were the staff anymore freindly probably not; did we have any problems with any of the flights no ,they are what they are ... If you have a certain amount of money to do the holiday then you cut your cloth accordingly .Would I use Ryanair to GC ..If the price was right then yeah its only 4.5 hrs there and 4.5 back ,would I go long haul with them no but thats not what they are there for ..Will it bring the price of flights down to GC I dont think it will to be honest

means through the saving through flights people may even consider 1 more week or holiday than usual my normal 2 weeks every 2 years is now going to be every year surley a great needed thing for more visitors especially puerto rico
we all need to start visiting again to give them the numbers to afford to make long needed changes in the resort
now everyone has learned to live within their means/credit crunch maybe more will consider self catering because remember you can cook few days and eat out a few days, (it would be great to have mre 2 bedroom apartments though not all families can cram into a 1bed,and better cooking facilities! ie oven)
i still think gran canaria still has an awful lot to offer and years ago really was a holiday hot spot so must now and again get local businesses moral down a bit

Just checked out the new timetables. Look good to me... and it means I can get back to Ayrshire for a weekend!(hmn!??)
Seems to me what I hear from most travellers that all the airlines are much the same, good days and bad days.
Can only do good surely, getting more people in at reduced prices.

Hello!
At last Ryanair are on the way! Great news for Gran Canaria but especially for ¨ourselves¨(the people that live here.
I have been travelling recently with ¨EMIRATES¨ fantastic service and greeted with ¨ SIR AND MADAM ¨ (the way service should be these days may i add) So there is nothing more frustrating than to then get on one of these ¨ LOW SERVICE HOLIDAY CHARTER AIRLINES ¨ pay an ¨absolute fortune¨ for the seat and then perhaps ending up sat next to a ¨ CHAV ¨ .

I know some people slag off Ryanair but from my perspective, in the last 4 years I have used them to travel to Fuerteventura, Alicante, Faro, Paris, Rome, Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester & Liverpool airports. Have also booked to travel to Tenerife in October. I live 3 miles from my local airport ( Shannon ) which makes travelling much easier.
In all those flights, we were only delayed twice, last Oct in Fuerteventura the plane was about 30 minutes late and leaving Alicante last week we we left on the plane for 35 mins waiting for a take off slot. Slightly unpleasant but not enough to prevent me travelling again.

good for manchester standing their ground against that famous airline called ryanair.
looks like Mr. oleary is craving more publicity earlier this year it was fuerteventura now mancheter its high time all airports stopped giving this airline cheap favours as at the end of the day it will be us the passenger that are left high and dry looks like leeds/bradfords looking good be a new scalping ground for this mob.

Our eldest daughter and three of her freinds are down in PR this week they flew Ryanair from Luton, no problem with the flight or booking in she said it was all good, what did surprise her was the the three of them all had a row of seats their self, the flight was only half full ! nice for the traveller but not so good if this is the norm for the island economy...sign of the times I guess.
Anyway roll on september
Cheers all

More new routes: New routes added to Ryanair winter schedule
Ryanair (http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Ryanair/) has announced the launch of 13 new routes from four UK airports and is to offer flights for the first time from Belfast City Airport (as previously reported (http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/images/flights/2007/06/ryanair-to-star.html) by Cheapflights).
The low cost airline is to begin flights from Belfast to Liverpool, Glasgow and East Midlands airports, with each route being served by a daily service when they launch on October 30.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport will be home to eight new routes with links to Budapest, the Polish cities of Bydgoszcz and Lodz, as well as Grenoble, Salzburg, Fuerteventura and Tenerife joining the service to Belfast.
