If you do decide to move over here and you have kids, then often schooling is your main concern.
There are many opinions about wether you should put your child in spanish school or in one of the international schools. Money is the main reason!!
My son goes to the british School of gran canaria in Tafira - outside Las palmas. This school is british run and follows the british curriculum. I felt this was the best for our son. his spanish has been slow to develop but at least he hasnt missed out on any schooling. he is in year 6 now and is the only british child in Juniors. The school takes children from nursery age up to 18 years of age You can take GCSE-s, A levels and the bachillerate. They have a branch in the south which will close when the new one being built in meloneras is ready(juniors only). Buses are available to take your children from the south to the north at a cost of around 1500 euros a year.
fees are around 3 to 5 thousand euros a year depending on age etc
There are other schools = Canterbury is another school that I can vouch for. Run slightly differently to the british school but generally very similar. All 6th formers take AS levels and then most go on to spanish selectividad subjects. If they really want to go to University in UK or states then they can do A levels. The timetable is very flexible and so they dont have to worry about group sizes etc. So good really if you are following a subject in the UK and your parents want to move over here at a very crucial time. Main school is in San Lorenzo (las Palmas) and it also has a branch in the south. Fees slightly less than british school
Oakley = only has its schools in the north. Nice friendly atmosphere
Spanish schools. You have to provide all the books that the child will need and often there is a charge for lunches. Your child may be offered spanish classes but generally he will be in classes with all spanish children.
I have heard many differing opinions about spanish schooling. many people are very happy - child learning the language is the main thing. lessons are more learning by rote rather than self directed learning. Children are not encouraged to express themselves. This is only what i have been told but does not go for all schools.
All schools run from Jan to Jan and so depending on when his or her birthday is, they may go up or down a year.
Contact emails etc can be found on www.ukinspain.com (http://www.ukinspain.com) , Las Palmas section
