Certain countries do require 3 - 6 months left on your passport to travel there, however GC is no problem as long as you are covered for the duration of your stay.....

The UK passport office website mentions though that you can actually apply for a new passport even if there is time left on your old one...I for one diidn't realise that!!:eyebrow:

yes and the remaining time left is added to your new passport unless it is just a month which is used up in the paperwork

straight from the horses mouth so to speak.

When should I apply?

When to renew (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-renewing-when.asp#when)
Standard applications (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-renewing-when.asp#standard)
Urgent applications (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-renewing-when.asp#urgent)
Non-UK residents (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-renewing-when.asp#nonUk)
You should apply as early as possible as it is more expensive to fast track an application. We strongly recommend that you do not book any travel before your new passport arrives.
When to renew

You can renew your passport whenever you want and do not have to wait till your passport is expired to renew it.
However, we can add no more than nine months unexpired time from the old passport to the new one.
When renewing, you still need to pay the full fee and no refund can be given for the unexpired time in the old passport.
Standard applications

We try to process applications in around three weeks from when they arrive at our office. This does not include postage time and applications can take longer at busy times. We recommend you use the Check & Send (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-post-office.asp) service offered by selected Post OfficeŽ branches.
If you want to make a standard application please go to About the application form (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-renewing-application-form.asp).
Urgent applications

If you need your passport within two weeks you should call our 24-hour Passport Adviceline 0300 222 0000 (see terms and conditions (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/terms.asp)) to make an appointment at one of our offices. We can offer a Fast Track one week service or a Premium same-day service. More about urgent applications (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/apply-urgent.asp).
Non-UK residents

If you do not live in the UK, you may apply in person to renew your passport whilst visiting the UK. In order to do this, you need to make an appointment at a passport office and you must provide an address in the UK to which the passport may be posted. You should call our 24-hour Passport Adviceline 0300 222 0000 (see terms and conditions (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/terms.asp)) to make an appointment at one of our offices. We can offer a Fast Track one week service or a Premium same-day service. Please note the Premium same-day service is not available for first passports, extensions to a passport, or to replace a lost, stolen or damaged passport.
