. Spain’s airports handled 11.08 million passengers in January, down -17% year-on-year, Spanish airports authority AENA has reported.
Of the total, 6.26 million travelled on international flights, down by -11.9%, while 4.67 million used domestic routes, down -23.2% in comparison with January 2008.
There were dramatic falls in passenger volumes at the country’s major airports. Madrid Barajas Airport handled 3,138,113 passengers, down -18.5%. Barcelona El Prat Airport handled 1,625,429 passengers, down -21.7%.
The tourist-dominated airports of Gran Canaria and Palma de Mallorca were used by 850,280 and 730,864 passengers, down -6.1% and -8.3%, respectively.
Just four airports in AENA’s 48-strong network posted growth in the month. All of the top 20 airports posted declines, many in double digits.
The number of flights handled by Spanish airports declined by -18.1% to 150,281, of which commercial flights were 131,850, down -16.6%. Domestic flights totalled 73,128, down -16.6%, and international flight numbers dropped by -16.5% to 58,722
