Hello, I am planning to head out to the canaries in a few weeks time, but would like to gauge employment prospects before hand, I'm 31, worked as a carpenter for last 10 years and now would like to work in either of the canary islands, so any feedback would be appreciated.. david cardiff u.k.

hmmm a chippie eh!!!!! best advice is check out all the large hotel groups eg the riu, iberostar, servatur etc etc as there is always joinery work in the hotels reparing doors locks etc and most of them have their own in house handymen setup.
there is a demand in the joinery trade on construction sites but due to h/s regulations you must be able to speak spanish
being on the island and a bit of door knocking goes a long way in seeking employment in the canaries, you may get some better advice from some of the ex pats based in pr when they see this thread.
good luck

It depends if you want to be independent or employed. Alot of trades people bounce work off each other but are independent in their own right.
If you become self employed, then you have to pay around 240 euros a month as an autonomo. Thats like your National insurance. If you are employed, then your employer pays that amount for you - which is alot for an employer - hence most people are self employed. Thats my understanding of it anyway.
Put an ad in tips and info or RTN newspaper and wait for the phone to ring.
Get known around the community and be reliable, honest and trustworthy. Your name will gradually get around and after awhile you'll get work.
Do some work for a bar so everyone can see your handy work.
Just some suggestions. It'll happen by word of mouth but it may be slow.
