I had to go to the police station today to get residencias for the kids as one of them is going on a school trip and god that is a long day.

You have to take your birth certificate, passport and proof from the town hall where you live and copies of all of the above and then join a really long queue to get the forms then you have to fill in the forms and queue again. Then go to the bank and when the lady says any bank she is lying we tried 4 different banks and ended up in my own bank to pay the cost is 15.80 per application. All of this has to be done before 1.30 as that is when the office shuts in the police station, you then get a green bit of paper to prove you are a resident!

If you need to do this then take a book as you could be there a while LOL

Thats a coinicidence! I was also doing that same paperchase yesterday with three kids (from two families with their parents) who needed the same stuff. Started first 8.00 getting copies of everything in triplicate, down to town hall in Arguineguin to get them empadronado, they issue a temporary certificate to allow us then to go up to San Fernando police station to apply for NIE/residencia. Over to bank, and like redswan says, best to use your own as any others get funny about paying in the fee. Back to police to get the certificates. Then back to Arg town hall to get the empadronado completed. On top of all that the school needs written permission from Guardia Civil to allow the kids to go on a school trip. Fortunately the GC knew all about it so it was quite straight forward.
All in all it took about six hours of shuttling backwards and forwards and waiting in line to get this little lot done.

Not my kids, it was Caz's two and Jack. I was helping out as a translator to ensure everything went as smoothly as possible. I believe the school trip is to Tenerife for a few days.

Birth certificate? Is that new? Or does it only apply to children?

Me and Russ didnt need ours.Russ needed a renewal as he had lost his old card and i needed a brand new one,all done the same process, very easy although ours only cost 6 euro something each.
We are landed with an A4 green piece of paper that you cant possibly carry around.
We have ours at home and have made a fantastic copy with my scanner and laminated it to keep in our cars. And, i just have lots of black and white photocopies for when i need to show it,not that i do as my passport and drivers licence has worked well enough so far along with my NIF number.
Residencias come in very handy when booking flights, gets you a good discount lol.

Our residencias are about to run out, so we are going to have to get our green forms.

So, we each need our empadronamiento, old residencias, passport - anything else?

Can we do it on our sons behalf or does he have to take a day off school

if you get the forms from the internet then you go to San Fernando Polica station to the office right by the door, hand it all in. The little man stamps it and hands it back to you with a bill for you to pay then you go to the bank pay and then back to the little man and he gives you your green form.

Time...........depends how long the queue is in the office and the bank!

Also I needed the kids birth certificates so you might need Doug's:fatgrin:

Also remember that you will need to renew your Empadronimientos first if they are more than 3 months old. I have been told that the best time of day to go to the police station is mid morning when the initial rush has died down but you will need to give yourself time to get to the bank and back if you want to get your Certificados on the same day. You are restricted as to where you can pay the fee. We went to CajaCanarias in CC Bellavista. Best of luck!

How often do you have to renew the Residencia?

As far as I know, only when you change your address.

Our residencias are 5 years old, so they have run out - really annoying.
Yes, the empadronamiento only lasts 3 months and every time we need something they always ask for that and it has always just run out!!
The empadronamiento is better if you go first thing - about 8.30. Then you can be out by 9am

But for the green form we have to take our son out of school and close the clinic for the morning...not good

Just want to correct myself on the change of address issue. There is no need to get a new Certificado de Registro upon a change of address but just make sure that your Empadronamiento is up to date if you are required to show your Certificado to officialdom.

So .... Son had a day off school and we went on a family trip to the Policia national in the Euro Centre, San Fernando.
Arrived at 8.15 but office doesnt open til 9am.
Returned at 8.50 where the queue had grown but still not huge.
There are two queues - one for passports and one for foreigners to register. Our door was the foreigners one, just to the right of the main entrance doors.

I had completed the EX16 form, for each of us, which I had downloaded off the internet.
I had photocopies of our existing NIE cards, passports, sons birth certificate and the originals.
All stamped and then we were sent with form to pay 6.80 per person into bank.
Returned to ffices and sat inside at seat by the girl who had previously served us.
She fills all the details into the computer which then prints off the new green form.

We were home in Puerto Rico by 10.30. So not bad really.

Our passports are now our official ID and this form proves we are resident here. I have copied them all and laminated the copies. I would prefer a fine for not having our passports on us and only copies, than run the risk of having my bag taken with my passport in it.

The girl did say that if we change any of our details at any time, to go back and update the information with them.
The form has our parents forenames on them but didnt recognise Margaret (my mums name) so she is now Matgaret. The girl said to come back in a day or two and the name will be altered on the computer....but i dont think I'll make a specific trip to change that.
