They have been very busy here in Gran Canaria cutting back the bamboo & burning it (controlled burning) to try to avoid a repeat of the terrible disaster that hit the island last year. it is quite surprising how quickly it all grows back. It is worrying how easily a serious fire can start here. There has been very little rain throughout the winter & so everything is very dry. People need to be very careful discarding cigarette ends from cars etc.
In the intense heat last week a friend of ours had his lighter explode in the car (well dodgy)

Hope it doesn't happen again this year I would think that the islands are still recovering from last year but at least they will be prepared for the worst.
