For those on S.C. the best value food shop in PR is on the upper floor at the rear of the CC, and opp. is the only shop selling unpacked fruit & veg.

The shop you're on about is the locals supermarket called HERDESA. You will find this located above the chinese restaurants at the far end of the commercial centre. All the locals use this place and they have all the fruit an veg out (not pre packed). There is also a delicatesen and butcher counter but much better than the usual Spar and Netto that they have over there.

the supermarket under the portonovo apts. has most things a lot cheaper than the spar/netto shops and has a deli.
some things were less than half the price of the netto at agua la pera.

Dead right there, super shop and very handy for the ferry, & the delightful Marina Suites, wish I was back there right now.

As a regular visitor to PR I find the food prices have steadily risen in the last few years especially since the introduction of the euro. The price for a can of beans etc. in Netto or Spar is rediculous and the main bug bearer for me is the price of bread [Bimbo ] which I have found no matter where you buy it, it is a total rip off.

hi hillbank
i agree about the prices being going up over the years every country especially ireland have increased there prices.when we go self catering to pr we always eat our meals out it works out cheaper with 3 kids its brillant when you can get a breakfast for as little as 3 euro in the center.

I think that when you've forked out for a holiday the price of bread doesn't really matter. We buy cereal, rolls, juice, yoghurt, fruit, jam, ham, cheese and crisps and this does for breakfast and the odd sandwich, everything else is eaten out. I think Bimbo is more expensive 'cos they're cashing in on our love for toast. I love the fresh rolls and love shopping in their supermarkets as everything looks so fresh. Roll on September 11th when I am back in PR.
We have a friend who will not pay for a sunbed on the beach, pays loads for 2 weeks holiday and would rather lie on a sandy towel that have a bed and brolly, mad eh?

In reply to Deedle, i just feel totally ripped off every time I have to buy a loaf of bread and wonder why the price is so high in PR.As for your friend lying on the beach towel I can sympathise with him/her as I too would not give them the money to lie on an old sunbed that has been used hundreds of times before me.My wife takes a different view on this but I feel this is another total rip off.

I can see both sides of the coin here. You don't go on holiday to be tight with the pennies but on the other hand no-one likes to be ripped off. That's why this forum is so good - now we know where to go for our supplies and pay a fair price although I agree I would draw the line at lying on my towel on the beach !:nodding:

Bread in general is expensive on the island. I buy Rustico - a sliced bread that s about 1.25 a loaf. Baguettes are about 35 cents and that goes for the whole island not just tourists zones. Baked beans are higher as they know they can charge a bit more - spanish dont tend to eat them but brit kids do. I found one shop in the north where i can get them for 70 cents but they go as soon as they arrive on the shelf!!
As for sunbeds - when i used to come over here on my hols, i always had a sunbed. No sand on the towel, my own little sand free zone. Now i live here its too expensive to fork out for a sunbed every weekend. I'll have one as a special treat every now and then.

A good thing that the hotel sunbeds are free! But as I found out not everywhere, Crete hotel sunbeds were not free.

most people save all year for their holidays and budget accordingly the good thing with s/c is you eat when you want to eat and where you want to eat. but!! for breakfast with a family you either pay the fast ever rising prices for bread beans eggs etc and do all the cooking or take the easy way out and have a buffet breakfast in one of the restaraunts which is now just as cheap and no sweating over a cooker. the terrazamar and marina apts both now do cheap breakfasts round about 3euros for a breakfast must be as cheap as buying all the food in daily.
must be food for thought after all who cooks a dinner when on holiday so why make a breakfast.

rabc i agree is there anyone who buys a load of groceries and cooks all week on holiday.i certainly dont its great to get a week away from the usual routines at home. on our last visit we ate every meal out in the local cafes/restaurants only bought basics, milk ,yogurts for kids etc..after looking in the grocery shops around pr it was cheaper to eat out.

Must admit we hate cooking when on holiday. When we were there for a month in Nov 03, we got a bit fed up eating out every night so we cooked in the apartment a couple of nights....never again, it was a nightmare. We eat out all the time now. Who wants to wash dishes when on holiday???

when i 'm on my hols, i prefer self catering. Although I like to go out for a meal, i love making my own cup of coffee and drink it on my balcony etc with my fresh bread etc.
With kids, s/c is great. You can give them something to be going on with and that way you dont have to all go out for your dinner at 5pm when the kids are screaming that they are hungry.
I also like to do my washing etc on holiday. My best time is when i bring back all our clothes cleaned and pressed. I hate the beach towels at the end of the holiday - full of sand and salt
God I sound odd but I do enjoy shopping in the supermarket and cooking on my hols. Day to day, I hate it.
