Hi, I have just returned from my 1st visit to Gran Canaria enjoyed the holiday and found everyone friendly. However I feel I would like to point out to anyone visiting with the intention of shopping for Camera's or Video Equiptment make sure you do your research before looking around. Many of the small shops offer you cheap prices but when you decide to deal the price does not always include the accessories you normally get, you find they charge extra for items like "the charger" "the battery" etc... a lot of shops also offer you cheap camcorders on the condition that you purchase tapes and spare batteries from them, this is where they make the money out of you because the extras are set at high prices.
We (my brother and I )had major problems in a shop called Japan Electronics based in the Metro Shopping Centre adjacent to the Kasbah at Playa del Ingles. They sold us upgraded Batteries for our camcorders only for us to find after we charged them that they were standard ones. Upon returning to the shop we were greeted with arrogance, lies and nastiness from both of the staff.
We accept we were ripped off through our ignorance, researched the cameras not the accessories. But please take heed and avoid these legal conmen.
Also if a deal is struck please check that what is in the box is what you have agreed to buy. If possible speak to your rep or hotel/appartment staff see if you can gain advice before indulging. I have bartered in many foreign countries but I honestly found myself becoming frustrated at the underhand way many of these shopkeepers operated.
There are plenty of bargains to be had... Just be careful "remeber if the deal is to good to be true... then it more than likely wont be"
Happy shopping
