make sure you have plenty of cash to spare to see you through the hard times till you can find a job

Thanks Jim, Will do.
Can I ask a few more questions..
Does anyone know what the average pay is in Gran Cararia compared to jobs back in the UK as I have no Idea what pay is good/bad when looking at jobs. Not looking at anything high up, Reception work, Administration work.
What sort of rent can I expect to pay for a two bedroom property again not looking for anything special just want to make sure im being reailistic for the cost of living out there (at the moment I deem to be basing it on what I get paid at home which I know is unrealistic)
Thanks guys. xx

That thread talks about wages. Ok its last year but not much has changed really.
For reception and admin type work, you will need languages and you are usually up against spanish or scandis who have at least 3 languages which is an expected level and not paid more for

Thanks Mary, Thats great.
Do you know what sort of jobs are best suited for English/that English people get people that are planing to stay for good not just the season. Im just trying to get a realistic picture of what we can expect.

people either have their own businesses here or work in bars, cleaning or manage apartment conplexes. Its often who you know not what you know.
As Jim said, come with enough money to see you through a few months and give it a go. make sure you have some more money set aside so you dont lose all your saving, dont sell up in the UK and keep a base there until you are sure its going to work for you

Advise on where to start hmmmmm.....think very carefully about it this season was really late coming and then was very short many businesses have folded and others are struggling as Mary says you need to think very carefully about what you are going to do for money as there are few jobs and the pay here is very low.
Most questions have been asked before on here so if you search you will find the answers, good luck.

Thanks Everyone, It really does help.
I know we'll struggle at first but i need to make a better life for my daughter.
My background is in Events organisation and Shipping (both very different I know) but the fact that I don't know much Spanish is letting me down finding a job in these fields. My partner is a bus driver and will prob have the same problem.

My advice is to ¨forget¨ what jobs you had whilst in the uk!
I was a ¨double glazing salesman¨ for a few years (one of the ¨ honest ones ¨ may i add...........)
I now have my fingers in several different pies (don´t be nosey viewers)
and after 16 years of ¨living in the sun¨ i can confirm that every year it gets more difficult!
but i always have my ¨little book of contacts¨

The standard is a 9 hour shift (without a break) and 36 euros fixed. You might (or might not) get tips too.

your little book of contacts lol no one wants to know what or who u have in there. as marcus says be prepared to do a job that you wouldnt think of doing in the uk and for money you would not get out of bed for either.

I have been told to expect 30 - 40 euros a shift. Would you say that was reasonable to expect?
