Authorities have further clamped down on electical orders issued some time ago with P Rico's main commercial centre now affected. Following up orders to upgrade electical safety following last years burn out the electricity supply to phase 3 of of the centre has been dissconnected:-

Doesn't sound good news for the businesses. With people coming back saying how quiet the resort is not having any electric can't be helping business.

Might not be as bad for businesses as staff/tourists getting electrocuted.

I was told that phase 3 in the CC has been turned off so as ella said all the end with scruffy's etc in has no electricity unless they bought a generator after the fire! Not good for business but as Alan say's good for safety!

It seems to me, everything over there works at a
snails pace.It looks like the authorities have
stepped in as there is a saftey issiue which
should have been sorted out in April.
How typical Spanish that what should have been a
temporary supply of power should drag on so long,
waiting for the main supply to be fixed.
Well done the authorites. As been said , the saftey
of the tourists comes first. If the place looks run
down then the traders have only themselves to blame.
chorlton
14th July 2007, 06:01 PM
But is it like over here where the electric board would be responsible for sorting it out? Or the management company of the cc? In which case are the businesses (although maybe not entirely blameless) being penalised for something out of their control?
redswanlady
14th July 2007, 06:11 PM
My understanding is that the bars/locales were told to do certain work and they havn't done so. The authorities have got no choice but to stop supply until this work is done else it could drag on for another year and then another. It is a shame that the people who have done the work have been punished as well.

Rite so even if they might be rented its the tenants rather than the landlords that have to sort it out. You are right though shame to punish them all - bet there are some choice words being used against those that haven't sorted theirs out!:banghead:

Phase 3 of the CC is out of electricity.
The problem isn't wiring within the bars etc it's a communidad thing, they were warned after the fire to get things up to scratch but as we have now found out they haven't!!
We have been closed for a few days and aren't allowed to hook up a generator!! Our electrics are all new but we have been told we will be breaking the law if we get a generator, although saying that there are a few places that have gone ahead anyway!
This is a huge blow at the start of what should be our summer trade, the general feeling amongst owners is anger and despair. We've been told that the electric should be back on by tuesday at the latest but after a hard winter a weekend with no income isn't what was needed!
Phase 1 and 4 have also been issued with warnings, but i would imagine that they are on it after seeing the outcome if ignored!

Translated from Canarias 7 about a meeting on the 26th about the electricity problems in the PR CC
The communidad of the third phase of the commercial center of Puerto Rico, that havent had electricity since 3 of July, are going to warm up the summer of the South with public manifestations if the Council of Industry does not authorize a provisional enlistment of energy within the next week to them. The representatives of the 130 premises, went to Motor Grande, and from there they walked quietly to the commercial facilities. Here they received the visit of the mayor, Francisco González, whom they asked to solve the problem as soon as possible. Meanwhile, eletrical technicians will try to convince the female leader of the section of the Main directorate of Industry and Energy, Aída Segara Sanchez, that given the advanced state of works she authorizes the provisional enlistment of the electricity. She is more concerned about the fire risk. If this is sorted out, then they think that there will be no problems in authorizing the replacement of the electrical provision. In any case, the last word has Aída Segara.

I spoke with Stevie and Phil from the Harp down at Pio Pio on Sunday and they told me they should be back on as stated above. It has cost the bar a five figure sum to upgrade and get their electricity certificate. We really missed the great fun in there during our recent visit.

I know a lot of tourists go to the CC, but as it has been said many times before, there is a lot more to PR than that. Passarella, Agua de Perra, Amadores and the family friendly Europa Centre. We are just back after 3 weeks there and didn't feel the need to go anywhere near the CC. Don't worry, you can still have a great time without the CC.
redswanlady
27th August 2007, 07:56 AM
There have been inspections in all of the CC over the last few weeks for a great number of bars, the rumour that phase 2 was being turned off was mentioned but as of yet it is simply that a rumour. Everyone concerned just has to wait and see, as Colin says there are a number of other CC's and I cant see how it will "ruin" holiday's if a handful of bars are closed at your time of visiting! I think many of the bars wish they could just "get is sorted" but unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

I returned home from PR sun morning and the electric problem didn't affect our holiday 1 bit. Like every1 says there are still loads of bars that are open. La Fiesta was closed but both snoopys and bora bora were both very much open. A holiday is what you make it and at least you try out other places if the usual 1's you visit are closed. Hmn, not quite sure how that' one will work out Rab, Highlander have such a following over many years, and they run a great wee bar, it's time they upgraded to a bigger bar ,they're rammed on matchdays....and , in many ways to a better spot. Wish them all the best, and have much respect for them, they've traded for years, not ones who set up with bright ideas but find it's harder than it looks and can only just last for a wee while.
They're sensible folk who know what they're doing, will decide wisely and I've no doubt do even better.
(sorry off topic.....I've just realized it's electricity cuts thread, sorry!...... but I'm very sure they have an electricity box!!!)

Hi I have been following this story as I am going to P Rico soon, in a previous post I asked if El Caribe (next to Highlander) restaurant is still open as we really enjoyed it there last visit, a friend of mine has just come back and said it was closed. I have just read now that they are knocking through to the highlander is this correct or have I just read it wrong? Does anyone know what is happening with this place? Many thanks.:thankyou:

it was very busy a few weeks ago when we were over and it was a shame because customers could not enjoy their dinner for the crowds hanging about outside watching the footy and roaring and shouting at the highlander bar next door. waiters were fighting a losing battle trying to keep a path through to their bit past the highlander.....................mind you it was the scotland france game lol.
anyway good luck to the new owners as it is a little hidden at the moment but once they take over the highlander it will be well seen.

Just got back...there a few bars / restuarants / souvenier shops with no electric . They are the ones that have NO electrical safety certificates , and have been cut off for everyones benefit !...Some of the "junk" shops are continuing to trade using battery / candle lighting . The sensible ones are having re-wires ( there is 14 electricians billitted at our apartment block alone ) . ALL the responsible owners have had thier certs done , and repairs carried out as necessary , so there should be no escalation .
A thought...if an owner cant be bothered to make sure there staff and customers are safe...would you want to be in there establishment?

Thanks for the updates. I've been watching this thread with interest, as it's not long till I go to PR for my first holiday in several years. I would have been disappointed had the whole CC been closed down. But you're right Handyman... I wouldn't want to be in an establishment that can't be bothered to ensure safety.

phaze 4 have just all had notice about there electric this could be the next bit to close lets hope for the bar owners sakes it does not happen. (it gets me that you only rent the unit but you have to pay to keep it all in order saftey wise surely the electrics should be down to the landlord)

I heard today that everyone has learnt by the problems and hassles from the previous shut down. So things will be (or should) more organised this time with everything being done in 2 weeks and in short blocks.
