Hi I am giving serious consideration to moving over to Gran Canaria with my family. My kids are well up for it-my Wife not so keen! We would be in a position to buy a property but would want to find work. My wife is a fluent Spanish speaker and I am at an intermeadiate level.
How easy is it to get work? What about schools- ARE ALL THE ENGLISH SCHOOLS PRIVATE?
We have some friends on the island and love the place to bits, but we appreciate living and visiting are completely different and therefore would like any advise! I just feel that at 40 its now or never- I would not just want to do it as a retirement thing in 15 years. Can any one help?

There are lots of threads on this forum that answer most of your questions. So, do a search with your subjects and see what comes up.

But, in a nutshell:
Yes, all english schools are private - spanish schools are state
Being fluent in spanish helps but work is hard, hard, very hard. It depends what sort of jobs you are skilled in.

If one of you is not so keen maybe rent a house here for a year and rent your house out in the UK if that is possible.
Work really all depends on what skills you have and who you know.
Speaking Spanish really does make a big difference I think.
If you donīt do it you may wish you had in the future.

As Mary said most questions have been asked and answered before, all I would say is both of you have to want to do the move as it is really tough and it is easier if you both want to have moved.

One important thing to consider also is, that wages here are at a very low standard, and the unemployment rate is quite high.
