I see in my brochure that Gran Canaria has brought in a smoking ban in places.... is this as strict as here in Ireland that there is absolutely no smoking in bars etc? I am a smoker, but all for it as I will be bringing my 3month baby with me on holiday and it would be great to be able to stay in bars at night with her there if there is no smoking allowed!

Hello PinkGiant!
From my experience yes - they are quite strict about the smoking ban in GC. Used to be you could smoke in the airport at Las Palmas - you could literally step off the plane into the luggage collection area and light up but no more - it has to be outside the main terminal or - when on the way back in departures - up on the roof terrace which is the only designated area to smoke.
As far as bars go I'm not sure about Playa del Ingles - I stay usually in Maspalomas and there the ban is pretty full on in most bars - you can only smoke at tables on outside terraces. Also I went recently to the Atlantico Shopping Centre in Vecindario and the ban is in force there too - loads of people hovering outside fag in hand!
Hope you enjoy your hols anyway.....;)

Hi, most of the bars in Puerto Rico (Europa cenetre) are smoking bars and children are also allowed in them, as yet. The majority of restaurants are non-smoking with smoking allowed at the outside tables, although there are still some restaurants that allow smoking inside too.
Like Lucy has already said; the ban is in force in the airport and at the larger shopping centres (Vecinderio, Bella Vista etc) but definitely mixed restricitons in different bars/restaurants.

thanks everyone for replying.... i need my ciggies as much as the rest of you.... just dont want my little baby having to inhale it if we are going to any bars or restaurants, but sure if i sit outside she'd be fine if the restuarant or whatever wasnt nonsmoking.
