another top class hotel in puerto rico is the gloria palace which sits perched on a cliff top. although sitting at the top of a cliff it has the added bonus of having a panoramic lift down to the promenade walkway below.this walkway is halfway between amadores beach and puerto rico beach. all rooms have sea views and some of them make you feel as though you are aboard a ship and not on dry land s/c h/b f/b and a/i on offer here rooms are fab and two swimming pools plus a thalastherapy centre great base just for chilling out view here http://www.rab.c.fotopic.net/c331935.html

:D Yep, we stayed in Glorias back in September 05, we liked it so much we're gonna give it another go September 06, so far we've stayed at the Azul twice Rio sol twice and the Revoli and Gloria's is by far the best (In my opinion of course).
Cheers all

The old man and I had a lovely week at Gloria Palace in December. It's a nice hotel with a fabulous location (see Rab C.'s pics) I don't think I'd do the half board thing again though, as there was a bit of a scrum at dinner if you went later than 7 o' clock, and meals out are such good value.
Glad to be back in the forum, as I was blaming son's computer for not letting me in!

We stayed there last Feb and it is beautiful, I agree about the rush at certain times as well. Is it available on room only though ?

Its available on B&B rate. I'v stayed there half board (only because when we booked it was only about £20 more than B&B). Loved the hotel but didnt like the food

I must check that out, I found the food OK to be honest, particularly the pancakes in the mornings... Is there any restaurant that does pancakes in the mornings ? I dont eat pork so breakfasts abroad are kinda restricted. I get fed up of eggs and beans.

My wife and I are coming for holiday feb. 27 and thought we were to be staying at the gloria palace in Puerto Rico, but it turns to be the gloria palace in San Augustin. We were just wondering if anyone could tell us if the one in San Augustin is as good as the one in PR. We have read good reviews on the one in PR. We are trying to decide if we sould try and change hotels. The mix up was our own fault for assuming it was in PR.
Any advise would be appreciated. THANKS

My man and I had dinner there november 2004, in case that helps! We were then shown the rooms and everything was very top class in my opinion. Certainly the hotel is situated in a nice area and the view from the restaurant is something you won't forget. So, can't comment on the room service, but everything looks (´looked) great! I wouldn't mind staying there....

We stayed there 2 years ago, and are on our way back on the 2nd of March. Hotel is nice. Didn't ever order room service, as there are many resturaunts in the area. Breakfast is great and a wide selection.
Great view from the roof top pool. Another benefit is the Spa that is on the grounds.
Good luck
Wish I was there

a/i or b/b the choice is yours but pr as you will probably know has an enormous wealth of rests. and bars which are not expensive a/i more or less ties you to the hotel.

hi my in laws stayed in the gloria last year and say its lovely.they stayed half board and say the breakfast buffet was massive, plenty to eat .evening meals they found long to be served.a lot of hotels anywhere have the same menu night after night .b&b is ideal as there is plenty of restaurants in pr and mogan etc to choose from.

The Gloria Palace gets the most diverse of views...........
It is in a spectacular location and there is an impressive view from all rooms. It is a very large hotel and essentially is in 4 seperate blocks.
The rooms are very large and the thalassy centre is excellent.........
HOWEVER BEWARE!!!!!!!! thats where the positives end......it is the hotel version of the saying 'fur coat no knickers'
The staff are APPALLINGLY BAD
The service is even worse than that.......
Everything is extra cahrged including, bath towels, kettles, safe etc
and to top it all off..its €17 to use the thalassy pool for two hours...
OH and the entertainment.....DONT EVEN GO THERE......
SO to sum up!...if you are used to 1 key apartments and get the GP cheap///GO
But if you are paying for and indeed expecting a 'hotel' its not for you......
I would not reccomend anyone to stay at the Gloria Palace.......its not glorius and not a palace!!!!
IF you want service, location, style, quality and real value in PR stay in the Morasol Suites or the Marina Suites.........FAR MORE SUPERIOR.......to call the GP a 4 star hotel is a sad joke
chorlton
23rd March 2006, 09:32 PM
I do think the service is poor but the quality of the hotel is superb. The pools are lovely and I would expect to pay for the thalassotherapy as its an additional service.
Unless the Marina Suites is superb when we stay there next week I would pick the GP everytime - I'd only stay B&B rate though as I prefer to eat out.
rab_c.
24th March 2006, 12:18 PM
mmmmmmm strong comments from liam, have to say I agree with chorlton but having been to the marina suites a few times now that is what stops us going back to the gp.
for families where kids are involved then a/i is the ideal holiday as many families have small children and find it harder to eat and drink out. and the kids crying for lollies ,ice cream and juices all the time makes the gp. or even the riu vistamar ideal.
bath towels we have never paid for them but if liam means courtesy beach towels the charge is to ensure that guests return them at the end of their holiday and they receive the deposit back and the marina suites also take a deposit for the towels they had to as when we first went to the suites guests were taking the towels home instead of returning them and safety deposit boxes are the same charge as the gp with a fee and a deposit which is given back to you when you return the key or card.
entertainment well how many hotels have anything at all on for the guests in puerto rico have to say entertainment is not great but the kiddies enjoy it and they have their own disco.
the thalastherapy although housed in the gp. is a private going concern if i remember correctly which is well worth the fee
the gp also has a/conditioning in all rooms a neccesity in high season you wont see that in a 1key hotel.
in my opinion the top three in pr. at the moment are the marina suites gloria palace and riu vistamar. but there are lots of really good hotels and apts in pr.and i would not knock any

I agree that the hotel is lovely, and the views are superb. Some of the staff are a wee bit surly, but I found the others to be fine. We stayed half board last time, but I wouldn't do it again, as there was a bit of a scrum at dinner time unless you wanted to eat at half six (which you might wanrt to do if you have children) Anyway, you can always stay in the odd night if you want, as I think they charge 15 euros for dinner. I can't comment on the entertainment,as I didn't see any of it, but I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

I agree with Liam. I'd only go back there on B&B, not full or half board. Just out of interest, in 2005 the GP were marketed by Falcon/First Choice as a 5 star, were in the exclusive section of the brochure and guests were transferred by taxi. This year it's in among the rest of the "ordinary" places and the transfer is by coach.

correct fred but that was a holiday company rating not the hotel rating and also if you agree with liam then you would not go back there as liam says it is a place to be avoided and would not reccomend it to anybody so why would you want to go back on a b/b basis as that is what chorlton and myself have stated think your wires are crossed mate

Never stayed there so im not really qualified to say too much, but am just back from the RIU Vistamar and agree with Rab-c its in the top three in resort. We received no charges for the towels, safety deposit box or the fridge and there were no hidden extras .
By far and away one of RIU's best points was the staff . I found everyone was so friendly and helpful from reception through the Animation Team to the cleaners even though this was in hotel with a lot of different nationalities, I can honestly say we were treated the same as everyone else in the place and its probably one of the reasons ill return. Its worth trying the odd word in spanish as the staff seem to apreciated the effort no matter how hopeless or limited you may feel your efforts are.

25th March 2006, 02:59 PM
Well I suppose you can only speak as you find and have to agree on the staff though didn't find any of them rude just rather slow so with that gathered together with over the top beer prices we didn't spend much time there in the evening but I understand the entertainment left a lot to be desired , as for the place it self we find it very much to our liking, nice and quiet ish' but only a stroll up hill or down to the local bars, the food we think is fine and have never experienced a scrum at dinner mind you we do eat early..so all in all IMHO Gloria's is a good hotel with plenty of pool/ sun terrace room and affords magnificent views of the Atlantic, but as I said earlier to each their own.
BTW..we go back there this September.

The Gloria Palace is in the best location in the resort....
The views are FANTASTIC...........
The Thalassy centre is GREAT....but €17 for 2 hours
The Pools are FAB........
The Service is TERRIBLE
The Staff are HORRIBLE
Everything is EXTRA...........
To coin a phrase 'The Gloria Palace iis the Hotel equivalent of Fur Coat and No Nickers'.....its a truly Awful experience.....if (I must say) you're expecting a 'Four Star Hotel Experience'...if however, youre fairly rough, from a bad area, just out of prison and smell and have general bad standards...then its a PALACE........BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think Liam may be exaggerating slightly! Views, pools, spa etc all fab. Staff can be a wee bit surly, but generally o.k. Only thing we paid extra for was the safety deposit box, but that's pretty standard. There was a deposit for the pool towels. We stayed half board, but wouldn't do it again, as there are so many good, cheap restaurants in Puerto Rico, (try Don Quijote at the Marina, El Gaitero in Agua Perra) Breakfast was plentiful and varied, dinner was the usual buffet stuff, plus chefs doing all that grilling malarkey with steaks, fish, chicken etc.
The Old Man and I enjoyed it, and we came out of prison quite a while ago and only smell a wee bit!
Have a great holiday, wish it was me.

Love the hotel - its of fantastic quality, rooms excellent, pools lovely as you will have seen if you look on Rabs site.
As with others I thought the service and attitude of the staff was poor and not representative of service I've experienced anywhere else on the island and personally I didn't like the food (fussy eater) - I would stay there again without hesitation however I'd only stay B&B as like Mharie says there are lots of nice restaurants around that I would prefer to go to.
I've never been in prison and I bathe daily so don't believe that I smell!

agree with all the comments but like mharie tend to think that liam is a little bit heavy but who's to argue he may have had a worse service than the rest of us.
have to say though that the dining room is a battlefield in the evening stick to eating out lots of exuberent germans here who do not know how to have manners but some of us brits are no better.
saying all that meals are fine if you are able to enjoy after all the hustle and bustle.
use the high level pool that is the one on the riu vistamar side of the complex nice and peaceful area well it was when we visited
like chorlton we will go back and hopefully a few of the service and attitude problems may have been resolved when you visit.
have fun

[quote=liam]Everything is EXTRA...........quote]
I'm confused Liam - what did you get charged extra for?
I know you pay a deposit on the pool towels but apart from that I never paid extra for anything.
liam
18th June 2006, 10:08 AM
Extra, Extra, Extra!!!!
Well, the large towels for the pool require a €5 deposit, which is fine and stops theft, However if you want to exchange the towel at the end of each day its €1 extra which is not refundable.....can you imagine robbing a towel not washed for 7 days?????kinda says a lot of the type of client they're expecting.
They charge to hire a kettle
Tehy charge for the safe
They charge for extra pillows
And the Thalassy area is €17 for two hours....thats €117 each for the week.......now may I say the thalassyis great and I understand its above the usual Jacuzzi....however their is no Jacuzzi by the pool and the pictures on the brochure/websites prominently feature the Thalassy centre....its something which (I feel) draws you to the hotel.............
If you usually stay in a apartment the GP is WOW, that I acknowledge....its better than most(not all) apartments in PR....BUT its advertised and Billed as a FOUR STAR HOTEL!!!!!!!!its not anything close to a four star hotel.....so as i've said before........its nice but dont expect or compare it to a four star hotel because its NOT ONE but advertised a s one...thats my pointa nd problem with it.......the staff and service the provide is Terrible..........oh yes ....whilst i'm on the staff in the restaurant(Buffet) are even worst than the rest of the complex........OH yes theres not any 'restaurant' in the GP....that I found strange for a '4*'.................................NOT IF I GOT IT FOR FREE.......which is a shame because the location and view is fab.......

Just back from 2 weeks at gloria palace with wife and 2 kids. What a great time and fab hotel. Had read previous post from people like liam etc regarding the service, staff etc. ********... we exprerienced great service from the room maids (teaching my youngest some spanish), reception staff from arrival to departure, bar staff at all the bars, waiters and waitresses couldnt be more pleasant and helpful. Never had to wait for a table at lunch or dinner, breakfast sometimes, but thats our fault for leaving it so late to get up.
Pool towels, yes 5euro deposit, changing them 50 cents, hardly break the bank. Okay thalasso is costly but if thats what you want on holiday be prepared to pay for it.(cost you a lot more in this country).
Finally we would not go anywhere else in puerto rico but the gp, and here's a thought its maybe not the staff's attitude that's the problem but ours.
anyone need any info on this hotel just ask.

Yep we will be staying at Gloria's for the second time come this Sept, can't be all bad lol, Me and the Mrs don't do that much other than catch the rays swim and have a beer or two!!!.. there is something else but too much of the latter soon puts paid to any of that...hee hee
Back on topic...
We found the food more than acceptable and maybe because we're up and about early we didn't have any hassle at breakfast, same can be said for dinner too, we both try and keep reasonably fit so we're going out this year with the intentions of using their on site health and fitness suites(that said it'll all go out the window when we're there..lol we'll see)
Thinking back to last year and about the only complaint I would have is the extortionate price of a beer, they seemed to charged about double to what is about in the local bars mind you this was only used for a lunch time sabbatical because we went out every night, in Tiffs for instance, we could get two pints of tropical for three euros (has it gone up KT?).
So to sum up.. good food.. very clean...beer a bit pricey..great views from the very spacious rooms and if try not to you let the occasional waiter/waitress who's had a bad day get to you, you'll have a great time.
Cheers all

Hi everyone
Im only new
Off to Puerto Rico on 31st March for virgin visit, staying in the Gloria Palace Amadores
Can someone help me please and tell me if you can:
What the hotel is like - rooms etc. (it looks fab but just someone elses opinion who has stayed there would be nice.
How long from the airport it is and how much a taxi will cost us? (cannot be bothered waiting on coach)
We are arriving lateish on sat. nite so where would be the best place for a really nice meal, we aren't big on eating in hotels love to go out
IS there a nice restaurant within walking distance or maybe and italian / chinese or Indian?
Thanks in advance guys, any help would be greatley appreciated
mary
14th March 2007, 02:23 PM
Its about 45 mins from the airport but go to the top of this page and book a transfer through Owen. Good service and very reliable. You can share a car or have one to yourselves.
Nearest restaurants will probably be
Amadores - Ciao Ciao for Italian - or there are quite a few to choose from along there
Or walk along the walkway by the sea the other way to Puerto Rico. You will arrive at the Passarella centre where there is
Oscars - more pricey end of the market,
Ma Bakers - pastie take away but they close at 4, so you'll miss them
Chinese - never eaten there so dont know
Little India - really good Indian
Rhodos Palace - greek - really good too
Crock of Gold - Irish pub
Harbour lights - pub

Yes Polar, a very good hotel. we had a week there last November, accommodation and transfers booked through Owen.
We had a great room on a high level overlooking the sea. If you get a choice go for one of these, some overlook the pool and can get a bit noisy come siesta time.
Whatever time you check in it seems a waiter appears at you elbow with a complimentary glass of cava - nice start to your visit.
The glass lift takes you straight down to the walkway, then it's just a short walk to Amadores, or closer still, Ma Bakers for a pasty.
Sure you'll have a good one,
All the best John + Emma

I am new and off to Gran Canaria this saturday - I am soooo excited

What is the weather like at the moment and can you give me forecast for next week please?
Also can you recommend any local drinks that are worth trying?

Hi Karenar!
You'll love the Gloria Palace, especially looking out over the sea of an evening.Good breakfasts too. We've been to Gran Canaria at most times of the year, and weather has always been hot, but not oppressive (apart from a couple of years ago in November, when they had four days of torrential rain!)
The only local drinks I've tried are the honey rum, and a lovely banana liqueur. Most places give you a wee glass when they bring the bill!
I'm sure the forumers will be able to answer any questions you have. I'm counting the days till my next trip (27)!!!
Have a great time.

Look at our weather report thread for daily (ish) out of the window weather reports.
Honey rum is good - they will give you a tot at the end of a meal in some places - with a little whipped cream and cinnamon - lovely.
You'll have a lovely time. The gloria Palace is a lovely hotel and well placed for Amadores and puerto rico

Gloria palace is a lovely hotel, so clean to say it is so big. We had a fantastic time, the staff, food and facilities were excellent.
The only bad thing really was the evening entertainment was very poor, but after a few beers you really didnt notice.
anyone going soon will have a great time, the weather was also fantastic.
went to the spa that was great would recommend you have a massage and go in the spa pool.

yes there is a nudist section at the gloria palace but its the gloria in san agustin not amadores and it is hidden behind the hedge at the pool there.
if there was one at the gloria amadores then it would be up by the pool at the riu vistamar end.
have some super zoom pics taken from the riu of the gloria palace if there are any nudists then they will be in the pics lol will put them on shortly as many people go to the gloria and come away again without ever knowing of the upper pool.

Hiya,
It's been a couple of years since I was last at Gloria Palace and just wanted to check when half board and paying for drinks with dinner and when having lunch, I take it you can still pay for it there and then rather than running up a tab!
I like to know exactly how much I have left to spend and not worry about running up a bill!
Cheers,
Kirsty.

When we had lunch there in May as non residents they were asking everyone whether they wanted to charge or pay cash so presume you will have no issues.

Pay as you go. When we stayed there the bills were all over the place. When we checked out, the receptionist warned us to check the bill carefully as there often were mistakes. There was a couple of things and they were deducted straight.

Thanks Fred, that's what I was planning on doing, becasue that happened to us the last time, bill was all over the place.
We land later in the evening and just want to make sure that in our tired state we know what's happening at the time!
Oooh only 21 more working days to go!

Enjoy yourself, we're going to Alvor in Portugal this day next week for 10 days. I'm sitting in the office looking out at the p*ssing rain and listening to the doom and gloom in the newspapers and the television and realising that I really need a break in the sun !!

Hi, am thinking of going to the Gloria Palace next year on half board but have a very, very fussy 6 year old boy with me, can anyone tell me what the meals - dinner and breakfast are like at Gloria Palace??? or would you recommend sticking to self catering????

Hi
We've stayed at Glorias three times now all on half board and found the food more than reasonable, lots of choices both for breakfast and evening meals and most evenings they have a 'themed night' where you can stick to the normal traditional stuff or try Italian, Greek, Irish, Spanish etc.
As for the fussy 6 year old, we had one of those way back too until I said enough is enough 'eat what we eat or go hungry..lol, she soon changed her mind...good luck.
Cheers

They do excellent buffet meals so there is plenty of choice. Quality is good too, both food and hotel in general.

I'll be going back for the second time in just under 3 weeks, we were half board and ate at the restaurant a few times and from what I can remember it was just the usual run of the mill half board buffet!
As with most hotels, it has special 'themed nights' but there are always the usual staples.

Got to say I am a fussy eater and didn't think the choices offered were half as good as those at the RIU (and I was limited at the RIU too!). Sorry but tepid food and picked over salad bars are not my idea of a good meal. Personally I think you would get more choice for your little one going S/C

the gloria palace is still doing a/i it may be that its the holiday company that your friends are using have stopped doing the a/i
here is the glorias main booking co. which shows that a/i is still available http://www.beach.es/ or direct with the gloria but it will probably bring you back to the first link http://www.gloriapalaceth.com/index.php?i=e
try this one also http://www.vimreservas.com/hotelgloriapalace/septiembre2.php?regimen=todo%20incluido
