Sorry but I have to get this off my chest. Whilst over on the island recently I booked a table for new years eve to celebrate my mate's 25th wedding anniversary at the Roma restaurant on the beachfront at P.D. Ingles. This is a place that I had used many times in recent years with no complaints. Whilst the meals we ordered were acceptable if a little smaller than usual the service was far to quick. When the bill arrived we were hit by a holiday period service charge of 10 euro's per head totally out of order, being a typical Brit on holiday I had a moan and paid the bill. I will never eat in this place ever again as it's a run of the mill eating house trying to be upmarket and living on It's past reputation so It's Roma no more for me !!!!!!!!

Most of the restaurants in Puerto Rico applied a surcharge of 25% to 30% on New Year eve also

we ate at Las Farolas on NY eve and they had a 30% surcharge - I've no problems paying it but it would have been nice to have known in advance rather than find out with the bill

there should be no need to add a surcharge.........
it is just a rip off to get more money.
if the did not want to open then they should not have.
they only stay open to make a killing.

Sorry swifty etc. But I have to disagree a bit here
I seem to remember in the UK that taxis etc asked for more on new years eve etc. So its not just here.
Yes It would have been nice to know if you were going to be hit by a surcharge but it is to be expected isn't it. Staff need to be paid more and nights may be longer. It would have been a sad Playa and PR if everyone decided to shut rather than charge extra to cover extra costs
But saying that, there is no excuse for bad food and bad service

I agree with Mary most of the pubs round my way CHARGED to get in on NYE , and also if not it was ticket only , also staff are paid double if not triple over here for working NYE and xmas eve and if it has to cost to go soewhere i wanted to on NYE i would go ,
a pub yesterday in altincham stuck up the prices of a pint of fosters by 25p JUST because it was the manchester derby and they were one of a few pubs showing it live , i wasnt bothered at all

I accept the fact that running costs are higher on Bank Holidays ie: Wages etc but it is totally out of order to charge a surcharge & not advise people before they book. Considering the fact that a lot of places are complaining that trade is down they are not helping themselves much by stitching people up.

well said Angie, a polite warning of the excess charge in advance of ordering the meal would have been in order !!!

I went to the irish tavern in the kasbah only to be told that drinks were being charged at new year prices.I think 11 euros for a pint and an alcopop was quite expensive,as were most bars.I think this is fair enough if the staff are being paid extra, but i was surprised to find out that in the instance of the irish tavern, the staff there only got paid the normal rate! so who pockets the extra cash?
Answers on a postcard please :) the normal price was 8 euros,by the way.All that profit wasn`t getting passed on to the staff.

that is what i meant.
even if the wages are treble the extras everyone is paying well exceeds this amount. the bars are ripping all the customers off knowing people will pay. just an excuse to make a big profit.
on n.y.e. you can still go on a pub crawl round halifax town centre with no charge to get into the pubs. the clubs and some outlying pubs are ticket only but just to stop too many turning up. drinks prices are not inflated, same as rest of year.
