The summer heat can be avoided in Gran Canaria this August when La Traida de Agua, essentially a water fight with 12,000 participants, takes place in the town of Lomo Magullo-Telde.
Using whatever voluminous vessels they can lay their hands on, the locals proceed to soak each other silly, dousing themselves to escape the hot summer sun and have a good deal of fun at the same time.
The water fight began in the 1970s in homage to the water hunts that sometimes took place during the height of summer when the crops needed water. The youngsters of the town would literally go out and hunt around for water; the name of the festival literally means "Fetching the Water".
