Of course pretty much anyone coming to the islands is going to need a flight or two so let's share some ideas and places to look for finding the best deals.
First I'll start - there's a company called www.skyscanner.net that has a database of all the major charter companies so rather than checking them all one-by-one, go to www.skyscanner.net and enter your dates and you can see which has the best offer for your trip.
If you're flexible with dates, at the top of the page are some options for type of search - click on "month view" and you can see what dates they are the cheapest for that month.

Looked at this site several times, its very good and easy to use. Its also worth remembering that these days two single jouneys with either that same company or seperate companies can some times work out cheaper than a standard return flight. Skyscanner will show that when it searches.

For us southerners ( I can't be the only one that lives south of Watford!) we've found that the BA scheduled flights from Gatwick are cheaper than most of the charter airlines, and generally give better flight times.

Allways use Owens transfer from the airport too. Once you've tried it you wont EVER go back to a coach transfer

There was a thread started on the old forum about a new airline flying from Cardiff in 2006 it starts in May and I noticed it is already cheaper to book a flight than Thompsons who up until now have had the monopoly at Cardiff.

We live on the Isle of Wight so we fly from Gatwick. We find the onboard service on BA superb & the Price is good. We have been using BA since last year.
When we took our daughter to LPA the other night she was flying with Thompsons & they were advertising empty seats. I don't know what price you can get tickets for if you go to the airport. But it would have to be very very cheap to coax me away from BA.

During really busy periods and school holidays when none of the charters seem to be offering reasonable rates, it can work out a lot cheaper flying a scheduled airline via Madrid. Check prices for any of the cheap-rate airlines to Madrid and then with Iberia, Spanair or Air Europa from Madrid on to the Canary Islands.
Another option there is to leave several hours layover in Madrid and get the tube into town and visit the city for the day.
A good webiste for looking at those options (though it's in Spanish) is www.rumbo.es
libbyo

I often fly via Madrid. I use Opodo or expedia to find the flights. A day trip[ into Madrid is fun. Leave you bags at left luggage and enjoy. make it a part of the holiday rather than an unfortunate delay flying. when looking at the flight times give yourself at least 6 hours in Madrid to go in and out and site see.

Agree with this , my parents have had to rush today to Sweden as my sister is quite ill , they only decided to go on saturday and BA came up cheap and expedia even cheaper but due to a MAJOR problem with expedia last christmas they NEVER want to use them again i tried Opod for them and it came up even cheaper than the other two , as there are no charters or budgets to Stockholm a price of £125 p/p 5 days before departure was brillaint BUT saying that BA is still cheaper for the canaries than anyone i have looked at

aw... i am currently trying to find a charter flight from ITALY to TENERIFE.
the only website showing some results is skyscanner.net though even there i can't find what i'm looking for. because i need a ticket for 2 adult persons, they wanna go there by the end of january and stay for a whole month. and on this website i found a flight but the return flight is set for february 3rd. i've been searching for days...
is there anyone here who could give me a hand? it's easy for all of u travelling from UK because there are so many offers but when it comes to italy charter flights... it's hard to find anything, ESPECIALLY if u're looking for a direct flight (like i am)...
Stephen

you dont say where in Italy you are traveliing from if you cam go from Milan try http://www.binternet.com/index.php and http://www.air-europa.com/en/default.html go from Milan and Rome and http://www7.condor.com/tcf/us/index.jsp go from Milan as well
also you cant try www.opodo.co.uk and www.ebookers.com who can quote you a price online as well

sorry steve i forgot to write that i'm looking for flights from: BOLOGNA, VERONA or TRIESTE. because MILAN is too far away from us... (we're from croatia, by the way)
and sorry but i don't get which currency is "KM"? because the price on skyscanner website is in KM and I have no idea what that is? the only currency under that name that i've heard of is bosnian... but i doubt they're using that one... lol.

We flew out in February with BA. If you get in early, you can get a good price; but the nearer the day the higher the price. Indeed, after every six people book, the price goes up!
Service-wise, they are pretty good; free alcoholic drinks, free meal and a tad extra on the leg room.
There were free papers on board but you had to be quick, not everyone got one.

Just had a mate looking at cheapflights.com and made a booking for Gatiwck to Las Palmas and back for 124 pounds in May.
She got a confirmation back saying the price had gone up so that wasn-t available and the trip back would be to Birminghamª
2 days later and the origional fare she saw is still on their web site so sounds like a bit of a scam to get people into their booking system.
Be careful when you book, especially if you dont pay straight away as youmay have just made an ENQUIRY and NOT a booking.

As from October 2006 - rumours are that Easyjet and Ryanair are starting to fly in to the Canary Islands and price wars should start!
Already Spanair have announced in the press that once low fares are released they plan on selling a set number of seats from Madrid for 1 euro each so fares via Madrid should also be pretty interesting...!!!

Ryannair have said publically they wont be flying to the canaries , the islands that they were rumoured to go to were Tenerife but landing at the north airport and Fuerteventura , not sure about Easyjet but i would be suprised as the landing fees will make fares expensive Tenerife would really IMHO be the only island feisable as it ahs a second airport and the budget airlines will use taht

Some guy on eBay selling booked a flight last month with Thomson for 2 persons to
Gran Canaria for the 18th-25th November and sadly to due to unforseen circumstance we are now unable to attend.Flights cost me £175.00 in total and I offer here at starting price for sale at £70.00 - details as follows :
Departure
London Gatwick 18/11/06, 14:45 arrive Gran Canaria 19:15
Return
Gran Canaria 25/11/06, 20:15 arrive London Gatwick 00:30
I have been advised by Thomson that the admin price to perform a name change is £25 per person so in total this
could be a real bargain for you - a flight for 2 persons for
just £120.00 to Gran Canaria
Sounds a bargin. I fancy it myself if i could get time off work...

easyJet announces NEW Spanish base
easyJet, Europe's leading low-fares airline, today announced a significant expansion of its services in Spain and the launch of a new base at Madrid’s Barajas airport. Madrid will be the airline's 17th base and the first in Spain. The Madrid base will commence operations on 16 February 2007 with several brand new routes from Spain’s largest airport. The details of the new routes and the size of the operation will be announced in September.
easyJet began operating from Barajas in 1998 and has since grown significantly every year. It is now the fourth largest airline and the largest low-fares airline to operate from the Spanish capital. Last year alone easyJet carried 900.000 passengers to and from Madrid – twice as many as in 2004.
Andy Harrison, easyJet Chief Executive, said:
"easyJet continues to grow across its network and in particular in continental Europe. We believe that Spain has excellent opportunities for growth, as air travel is still dominated by inefficient traditional airlines that do not act in the interest of the consumer.
Spain has been a key market for easyJet for the past ten years and the new base will take our commitment to a completely new level. While Madrid is one of Europe’s largest and most important capital cities, it is still underserved by low-fares airlines. easyJet’s new base will make Madrid much more accessible for international visitors and will offer Spanish consumers low cost with care and convenience.”
easyJet currently serves nine international routes from Madrid, including London, Bristol and Liverpool, and offers a total of 72 routes to 11 Spanish airports. With 7.5m passengers in 2005, easyJet is the largest low-fares airline in Spain and carriers more international visitors to the country than any other airline apart from the flag carrier Iberia. Spain is easyJet’s second largest market, behind the UK.
WHAT THIS MAY MEAN IS THAT THEY MAY FLY TO THE CANARIES USING THEIR OWN PLANES FROM MADRID BARAJAS WHICH MAY MEAN A CHEAPER FLIGHT IN TOTAL ESPECIALLY IF BOOKED EARLY , ALSO IT MAY MEAN THAT MORE AIRPORTS IN THE UK WILL BE FLYING TO MADRID THEREFORE EASIER FOR PEOPLE WHO CANT GET TO THE PRESENT AIRPORTS IN THE UK OR DONT WANT TO FLY FROM THEM
THEY HAVENT ANNOUNCED SCHEDULES YET BUT KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THEM SOON

I have just been searching on easyJet's website for flights for 2008 (more out of curiosity since I think we'll now be flying Iberia through Madrid).
I've searched Mid April, Mid May and Mid July and all outbound (LGW-LPA) flights are £189 and all inbound (LPA-LGW) priced at £179.
I assume this is the price and competitive benefit advertised in their press release? Nearly £400 return ticket! The BA tickets sold for similar dates were around the £100 mark and Iberia for similar dates is £145ish.
Nice one easyJet!

Had intended travelling with Easy Jet, going out on 30th June, returning on the 21st July. The final price without luggage or insurance was £89.98 2 days ago. Yesterday it was £369.98. Wonder if there is something wrong with the pricing section of the site, as I get exactly the same quote for every date and flight-time from April through to September. The previous day showed a wide variety of prices. I feel that there is something amiss in their site.

Hiya. We have just booked flights going Sat 26th April and return Mon 5th May from Manchester with flythomas.cook.com. Day flights, 15KG luggage (then 5KG hand luggage also) £249 for the both of us, with all the charges etc. When I did a check for a family of 5 ( there is only 2 of us) the same inbound flights that we paid £55 each for, when you try and book for a family the flight is £221 each!!!! Where do they get the figures from??!!
Anyway, if there is only 2 of you, its worth checking it out.
We got our insurance from moneysupermarket.com for £9.90 for the 2 of us!!
Transfers are with Sky Transfers, whom we have used twice in the last 7 weeks. £15 PP return to and from Puerto Rico. Ok thats on the shuttle bus, but its no different to going with a tour operator and going on their coaches.

9th February 2008, 05:27 PM
From my experience with airlines, it worth trying the following to see if you can get better fares. Let's say that 4 persons wish to book a flight.
Step 1
Get a quote for one passenger return to begin with.
Get a quote for one passenger, 2 single fares.Select from the above the best fare, 2 singles or 1 return. Sometimes they are the same.
Lets say in this example, the return flight is at a better price (not always).
Step 2
Using the return flight option, get a quote for 4 persons. If it is greater than the return price for one person, keep decreasing the number of passengers till you obtain the lower price. Book this number of passengers at the lower price if you are happy with it, and the remainder at the higher price.
All airlines have a certain quota of seats at a given price. If there are only 3 left at the lower price and you request 4, then you will be quoted the more expensive fare.
The following works with some airlines
If the website gives you the option "are your dates flexible?" always choose it, even if you can only travel on a specific date. Sometimes, this method will bring up a better price than if you did not select this option.
It would appear that if your dates are flexible, the airline considers your travel as non-essential, as distinct from business travel in which the travel must be undertaken on a specific day.
The airlines try to get the most from us. We must therefore try to outwit them.

just got back early this morning from g.c landed 5am ema with thomas cook, 30 mins early,
while in departure lounge there was a easyjet plane due to take off approx the same time as ourselves 01.25, then while sitting upstairs in the smoking area some one came over the tanoy & asked all the easyjet passengers to report somewhere.
then when we returned downstairs and checked to see if our flight gate was on the screen & noticed it said the easyjet flight to gatwick leaving @ 0.130 had been CANCELLED had a walk round but was unable to see any snarling passengers & no explanation.
anybody on that flight hope you all got home safely.

Am shocked at the prices from Manchester to LPA in June - £699 for 2 of us with Thompson! Have considered Easyjet/Madrid, Madrid/LPA with Iberia, with an overnight stay outbound at the brand new Madrid Hilton is coming in cheaper at £444, connections back to Liverpool allow 2 hrs 20mins to board return flight. Having been appalled by the very high prices for direct flights to Las Palmas I decided to find an alternative. I flew Easyjet Liverpool/Madrid, one night stopover in a very nice hotel near the airport. Following day flew Iberia Madrid/Las Palmas. After my holiday I flew back to Madrid with Iberia and stayed in a lovely hotel in the old part of Madrid and had a great night touring the tapas bars in Madrid and sightseeing the next morning, followed by a menu del dia in El Corte Ingles, 3 courses inc. wine for 9.95 euros. Flew back to Liverpool with Easyjet late afternoon. Total cost for the 2 hotel stopovers and flights £200 per person! Less than a direct flight from Manchester!

Flights and city-break for less than flight price. Given that they are too separate flights, you could have had a 2 or 3 day stopover in Madrid. Something to consider.

Have been to Madrid before and only needed a one night stop over each way, if we had stayed any longer the overall price would have been more expensive than a direct flight!

Are there any other airlines bar Binter who do regular internal flights around the canary islands (ie Tenerife to Gran Canaria) ?

Islas Canarias provide an infrequent service. Some Air Europe charter flights connect with either Lanzarote and Las Palmas or Teneriffe and Las Palmas, one day/night per week. It will not show up on their website as it's a charter flight

Monarch flights for March 2010 seem reasonable compared to T Cook or Thomson but dates only seem to go upto the end of March, does anyone know how to book Monarch flights for April please ?

April is probably in the summer schedule. At the moment Monarch appears to be setting up a new service for the winter.

Jet 2 are flying from Manchester next summer, good flight timings grab yourself a bargain. Great to see low cost airlines at last - this year has been expensive!

It's that time of year again, and I'm thinking of booking my all important summer holiday. I'll probably be going away either at the end of August or the start of September. I've been looking at various sites for flights, but there doesn't seem to be any going direct from Belfast, is that correct? I know there's flights going from Dublin, but I don't fancy the 100 mile trip :(

I just did a quick search for a flight from belfast to GC. no direct unfortunately nearest would be 90 euros indirect via Luton from belfast city with Easyjet and ryanair. That was on the 23rd August one way, looking on www.skyscanner.net

Thanks for your replies. I have checked the Thomas Cook website and there are no direct flights from Belfast to Gran Canaria. A few years ago there used to be two direct flights to GC each week, that was reduced to one, and now there's none at all during the summer, which is sad. All the airlines seem to be cutting back on using Belfast, we don't seem to matter up here, lol. It now looks like I may have to look at other (limited) destinations for my sunshine hol , unless I decide on using a connecting flight or travel down to the ever busy Dublin airport.

Hi Julia,
I've had a search and it appears there is nothing really available. Easyjet unfortunately only fly to Gatwick and Ryanair don't have a flight until Friday. Thomson DO have flights to Manchester on Wednesday but again it says nothing available.
I know it is a pain and clearly more costly, but have you considered flying back via Madrid if that is at all possible? I have done that a couple of times back to London, but it may be worth a try to get back to your destinations.
Good luck.

After a lot of searching and 2 messed up flightbookings a lot off Phoning around and messing about i have now managed to get a flight to Birmingham for tomorrow and will take the train from there. It just proves that you should never try to do anything important when you are in a personal stress situation without||||| ||h||a||v||i||n||g|| ||someone check it. (It would have saved me a lot of time and money had i done it.)

Question....I am reading through the post's here, and I see that with the exception of a couple of instances, there is nothing newer than August 2009. Does this have to do with the old/new forum? Can I access the recent stuff somewhere?

I think that is has more to do with the low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Easyjet entering the marketplace. It is very difficult for most of the other operators to compete with them on price

Hi retta yes the older post's are still in place from last year, the forum was updated with a newer version but it proved unpopular with many members so it's reverted back to it's old style so the existing older posts have reappeared hence the gap in dates, hope this clarifies things !!

More Ryanair flights
BARCELONA, 7 Feb. (IRIN) -
Ryanair will open six new routes this summer season at the airport in Barcelona, which will be thirteen-based aircraft against the ten current in order to carry 5.8 million passengers in El Prat in 2012, compared with 2, 5 of 2010.
In particular, Ryanair will fly from El Prat to Alicante, Bilbao, Stockholm, Hamburg and Munich Menorca (Memmingen) and will increase frequencies on six routes: Gran Canaria (frequencies from six to nine), Ibiza (14 to 21), Malaga (21 to 28), Palma (from 21 to 35), Sevilla (21 to 28) and Tenerife (six to eight).
Thus, the Irish airline will add more than 190 weekly flights to El Prat, where it operates 39 routes (16 domestic) and expected to sustain 5,800 jobs in Catalonia, where he hopes to carry nine million passengers in 2012.
