planning to visit gran canaria sept 2006. last there in puerto rico 12/13 years ago. would like to either go to the gloria palace amadores in p.rico or also fancy two hotels in meloneras (the H10 playa meloneras palace or the gran hotel costa meloneras) can anyone advise. suitable for couple (50 years old) who like a quiet hotel (without loads of screaming kids) but nice areas round about to walk to at night.

Well im sure you would like the new hotel Cordial in playa mogan,
(Very little building going on here )and not near the hotel anyway it is a fabulous hotel. And lots of new shops and seafront bars, the beach now is all new golden sand. You would not recognise the place now (if you visited it when you were last here)

Here is the website for the new hotel in playa mogan. it is quiet here and you can book a garden suite. in the suites that are built round little canarian style courtyards. www.cordialcanarias.com (http://www.cordialcanarias.com)

Best on of all for lack of kids, exclusive and peace and quiet is near the lighthouse in Maspalomas "Grand Hotel Residencia" - problem is it is also one of the most expensive.
Gloria Palace I think would have too many kids and too many people for you.
Costa Meloneras again is HUGE (was it 1000 bedrooms) and a LOT of people. H10 Playa Meloneras Palace is quite spread out and quiet in places (get a sea view room).

Villa del Conde is nice too. Within the complex there are lots of little areas where you can hide away. A couple of bars and its right on the walkway to walk along to the Faro etc

I agree with Owen.Grand Hotel Resisdencia is lovely. It has a nice restaurant and little piano bar which is very calm and relaxing in the evenings, but in my opinion two things let it down. One is that it IS quite claustrophobic in so much as it is small with rooms all closely built together, and secondly it is UNBELIEVABLY expensive for what it is.(1000's of pounds for a holiday is ridiculous whether 5 star or not.)
I have stayed at the Costa Meloneras and it is stunning. The Hotel is HUGE with numerous restaurants, bars and beautiful grounds. It has an infinity pool and lovely sea views. What is great about its location is that you are a few minutes walk from the beach and its boulevard where there are numerous nice places to eat and drink overlooking the sea.If you walk straight through the grounds past the pool you reach a gate which allows you access straight out onto the boulevard. There is always a security guard on this gate to whom you show your hotel room accesss card to come back in again.I personally didnt find it particularly busy when I stayed there despite the number of rooms as it is so big everyone kind of gets lost in there. It is super plush and it would certainly be my recommendation.
Good luck and enjoy your holiday....:have-fun:

thats the one thing putting me off the costa meloneras - the size of the place - have been to h10 hotels in lanzarote the last two years ( the timinfaya palace and the rubicon) and think the h10's are quite good if not look all the same. have you been to the playa meloneras palace h10. whats it like compared to the costa meloneras? expecially for location. although not a beachy person myself my hubbie likes a swim in the sea and i quite like a walk along and a paddle. ankle deep is enough for me. any more advice. think its the lure of the panoramic lift in the gloria amadores that attracts me......................... so the more advice the better......................

Well you are sorting it out and getting help. But Gloria Palace is not situated that nicely from one point of view you can come down the lift and have a lovely sea walk right to peurto rico along the sea walk.
But that lift leads to a very small tunnel under the main road. It is situATED HIGH ABOVE THE MAIN ROAD. yOU WILL HAVE WONDERFULL VIEWS. bUT IF YOU LIKE A PLACE TO WALK AROUND THE GARDENS IN ,
ALL ON THE FLATand just straight down to the sea for a paddle or swim
and shops and nice restaurants all around.Village type place and harbour with boats in. And can book into a place with your own garden terrace
(very quiet). well and mix with a lot of people your own ages Quietly in the restaurants. well i still suggest mogan as i am more or less your age
and thats what our age likes. The cordial is a big hotel but the way it is planned out in 3 separate stages one of them being built on the lines of a small canarian village with gardens full of exotic plants and fruit trees with garden terraces. have another look at the website

tried to have a look at the website but for some reason my computer is blocking the pathway into the site. thank you so far for your help when we were at puerto rico 12 years ago we visited mogan on the ferry and were quite taken with the homely atmosphere of the town. maybe a little quite tho. what is the entertainment like at night? must admit to being a little lazy on hols. busy, busy, busy all year and when i go on hol i just want to chill out with my book during the day and go for a nice walk at night with a little entertainment not far from where im staying. want your cake and eat it or what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! will try site again:nodding:

I've been round both hotels and for the "impressive" factor and layout and my personal choice would be Costa Meloneras. Trouble is it's just so big and there are sooooo many people everywhere. You'll be hard pressed to find a quiet corner. Maspalomas dunes/beach is a 5-10 min stroll along the front.
H10 Meloneras Palace again has HUGE grounds but MUCH less rooms and people so easier to find a quiet corner and feel more relaxed, more peaceful. Meloneras beach 2 minutes walk but nowhere near as nice as Maspalomas, though also more peaceful and relaxing at Meloneras beach.
Each hotel have ****ty "mountain" views and fantastic "sea" views. Costa Meloneras sea view supplement is generall a bit steep especially compared to H10.
I would go for Costa Meloneras but think you'd be happier in the H10.
Then there's the garden villas in the nearby Riu Palace Meloneras .....

Skeenie - I haven't stayed at the H10 Meloneras, however I have just recently come back from staying at the Bahia Meloneras Bungalows which lie behind and a little further up from the H10 and as everyone has said IT IS smaller than the Costa Meloneras and most definitely not quite as impressive looking ( in my opinion). it is a few mins from Playa Meloneras which is quite isolated and barren compared to Playa Maspalomas which - as I mentioned in my previous post - has the nice boulevard, restaurants, etc. There is walk way you can follow directly next to the sea which takes you right up to Playa Maspalomas, however it is deceptive as it is QUITE a walk and VERY breezy. From where I was staying it was about a 15 min walk to Maspalomas Beach front, so I would guess about 20 from H10. In the daytime add a little more due to the strong sunshine perhaps taking it out of you!
Meloneras is lovely but there really isn't anything there in terms of places to eat and drink, but if you do like a stroll in the evening maybe the walk up to Maspalomas beach would suit you.I guess it just depends what your priority for your hol is.
Hope this helps......

think the sheer size of the costa is putting me off. by the time i find my way around it will be time for coming home. veering towards the h10 as i have been very comfortable in any h10 hotel ive been to so far. still considering the gloria amadores (for sheer curiousity) and very reasonable price or the cordial mogan playa. three different locations i know. what do u think??????????????? probably land up in blackpool at this rate........... thank god i found this site. at least im getting some decent advice.......................

hi debbieduck, have you ever been or seen the gloria palace amadores. coming in at a very reasonable price and think it would be better located than the h10. think your right as about the long walk i've been to lanzarote the past two years in h10 hotels and they are great hotels but seem to be in an isolated position .....................

Gloria palace Amadores is lovely (although ive never stayed there)
Access to the beach walk, from the hotel itself then you can walk either way right straight to amadores beach bars there fantastic beach. or right to puerto rico port, restaurants and bars there.
The walk itself is lovely i still do it now and again parking up at amadores
ending up at puerto rico for a drink, and then walking back again.

It wasnt your computor on the cordial playa mogan website, it was a problem they had on there website it is working now i have just been into it, yet i couldnt get in yesterday. They have pics of surroundings of the hotel on this site, now you can get in. It is a problem where to spend your hard earned money so you get a very good holiday, whatever you choose i hope that you enjoy it.

Their cliff lift goes down to the Puerto Rico/Amadores walkway and it's actually left to Puerto Rico.

u've both been a great help. think def going for gloria amadores. good price and good reviews (well except for liam) but one out of many isn't too bad (i can live with that) will let you know when i get booked and if this is the definite decision made.................... my sense of direction is about as bad as yours shirley so may well land up in lanzarote................
never mind so long as the sun shines and the wine flows i'm getting to the stage i couldn't care less.................
what about you two. where are you headed this year..................

or the cordial mogan playa.
Mogan is lovely, a bit quiet though by night but plenty of bars and restaurants. If you go there, the junior suite supplement at that hotel isn't so much but the difference in accommodation certainly is - they created a Canarian village complete with town hall and church just from the junior suite section.

Im (HERE )living in the valley of mogan skeenie, hope whichever you choose that you have a lovely holiday,
There are security guards to stop wanderers (who are not paying guests)
just walking into the cordial mogan willi nilly. BUT if you tell them you just want a look and to make some enquiries, Theyll let you into reception to have a look round there, and get some leaflets and details. (Just in there blows your mind) you are also allowed to have a drink at the bar in there
(Its the big glass dome bit) also walking up the valley from the beach end
youll find a restaurant attached to the hotel just over a little bridge.Anybody can have a meal there (I havent yet) most people think its just for people staying there. Anyway have a lovely time.

Sorry about the late reply Skeenie- been AWOL from forum! No, I havent stayed at the Gloria Palace but have seen it from Playa Amadores and MY GOD its a long way up which is the only thing which would put me off. Doesnt look like a prob with the lift and what have you and I guess you will have stunning views.
The other thing I would say is that Playa Amadores is WONDERFUL. Went there couple years ago and the beach is lovely, sand that doesnt burn your feet off as its made up of crushed stone(at least thats what my friend who lives in GC told me!) and lovely gentle slope into the water.....FAB.
Whatever you choose have a GREAT TIME........:nodding:
