Hi,

I visited the beautiful island of Fuerteventura in late September of last year, having booked a kitesurfing course/holiday.

While I expected to be impressed by the weather and kitesurfing (learning thereof) I was not ready to be captivated by the people and the geography.

I have lived & worked overseas on previous occasions, the last involved a stay on Bermuda, and there has always been something significantly wrong with the location to make me want to return to England.

However, I now wish to come and live and work on Fuerte and would be grateful for any contacts anyone might have in either the construction industry, or, sailing world.

I have my CV ready to e-mail to any prospective employers.

I hear what has been said about coming down and looking in person but I am trying to cover all bases.

Many thanks in anticipation of anyone presenting any useful information,

Andrew Dunn. :banghead:

There are more contacts on this site to do with Gran Canaria but i hope someone replies and gives you some advice.
Search on the web for sailling schools or contact the people you learnt from - they may be able to advise.
In my experience, Fuerte is a lovely island but is limited. A few people I know have lived there and couldnt wait to leave after a year or so and they were canarians.
Good luck in your search and let us know how you get along

And just to add to Mary's "kind words" i was looking at the property prices in Fuerteventura and it is much cheaper there than on this island. What a difference!!

Thanks for that Mary. Given the close proximity of all the islands I figure that I could work on any of them and so contacts on any would do; it's just that I like the idea of living on Fuerte, on the quieter NW coast.

Andrew.

Hi Jab,

I worked in Fuerte for 3 months and I can't really offer anything positive about the experience. The island is perfect if you fancy a week or two away from the rat race, but I was going bananas after a month (as a lot of people do!) because it is just too quiet. Most of the ex-pats I know also couldn't wait to get off the island but couldn't because of relationships or financial commitments.

My advice would be to arrange an extended holiday there before you commit to anything too serious. . .

If you like your geography then I suggest you give Gran Canaria a go and make sure you hire a car. Most people stick to the resorts and never get to see the heart of the island (it's stunning in some places).

I think the extended holiday approach does have its advantages. If you move permanently you are bound to wonder if you have done the right thing, and having the intention to make the move permanent will help you get over the doubts. You definately need to not get involved with the ex pats that are just stuck there. Learning Spanish helps you to be able to be involved with the cultural events.
