Lineker's Brother Jailed

The millionaire brother of former footballer Gary Lineker has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for his part in a £220,000 tax fraud.

Wayne Lineker systematically smuggled cash into Britain through a "tried and tested" money mule system, using unsuspecting family and friends.

London's Southwark Crown Court heard the money came from pubs in Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands.

It was laundered with the help of City stockbroker John Stacey.

He siphoned the money through several NatWest bank accounts before handing it back to Lineker.

The 43-year-old, who owns a £2m mansion in Fyfield, Essex, admitted one count of conspiracy to defraud the Inland Revenue.

His manager David Hodges, also 43, pleaded guilty to the same charge.

Stacey, 56, was convicted of the offence after a two-week trial earlier this year. He was jailed for 20 months.

Southwark Crown Court heard how the Match Of The Day presenter's brother traded on the family's famous name when he sold his Leicester market stall and opened the first Lineker's Bar in Tenerife in 1988.

A series of successful bars in the Canary Islands, Cyprus and Portugal were adorned with ex-England captain Gary's memorabilia.

The court heard they were frequented by footballers such Joe Cole and Kieron Dyer and TV stars including former EastEnders actor Ross Kemp.

Wayne Lineker still employs more than 200 people on the continent.

But the court heard how he was desperate to use his money in the UK without attracting the attention of the taxman.
