Well as from the first of Janauary 06 we have new smoking laws in Spain.I have the full list in front of me in Spanish but haven't had the chance to translate them at the moment. There are various new laws stating where you can and where you cannot smoke.I have put this under the Restaurants etc as this will be an area of importance to the smoker.I personaly do not smoke and totally agree with this new law(with full respect to you smokers)But according to this new law the fines for the buisinesses that break the law, will mean massive fines!!!!!
I don't now how this will change anything in the bars and restaurants in the tourist areas but just to warn you that it is here soon..........

Its already causing confusion. It will do for a while till every one sorts out what to do.

I'm amazed that the spanish are putting up with it. These are people who light up at the tills in the supermarkets whilst packing up their shopping or stand under the no smoking sign, smoking , in the airport baggage collection bit.
According to the spanish, rules are made to be broken or bent - so we'll see how it all goes.
I hope it is successful as it makes it much more pleasant but I hope that bins are put around for the smokers and we dont have to wade through fag butts on the pavements

Id agree with you Mary, but bins? I dont think they will go that far. Last trip the security guards were smoking at the airport, so I think little hope of inforcement. EXCEPT when they realise its a good money spinner in the tourist areas..........

i am unsure on this ruling and if it will survive or just be openly flaunted
i smoke and hate seating in restaraunts where people are smoking , but bars ??? no sure , in the height of the summer i just cant see it working IMHO
i hope it does BUT speaking to a freind from the states about New Yorks ban he said that people just stand outside the bars and smoke in teh street and a lot of scuffles have happened where pedestrians walking past have ahd smoke in their faces and also non smokers going into a bar and having to a run a gauntlet of smokers
i hope it works but i have reservations

I noticed that overnight new notices have been installed in the apartment block we are in. There is no smoking in any of the public areas of the complex. I have to say I am one of the biggest hypocrites when it comes to smoking!!!
I used to smoke over 40 a day but now I can't stand the smell of it.But it is going to be tough on the people who still indulge.!!!

Ask me my only hate on holiday. Smoking in restaurants. Disgusting. No other word for it. I thought Gran Canaria would be the last place to bring in such a ban. I couldn't believe it when i read the news.Fingers crossed the ban is upheld.

my lad last year ( he is 12) said to me when we were away
is it law that all the foreign men ( ie spanish, greek, turkish) have to smoke, because almost everyone does. i told him no it isn't law but the majority of them do smoke it is probably just the way that they have been brought up, ie father ,grandfather etc probably all smoked. how will the locals cope if the can't light up.
as for new york we were there 2 1/2 years ago and if you wanted a fag you did have to stand on the street, all the bar workers etc hated the new law. i smoke about 5 a day and i was embarassed when i had a quick puff before going into the empire state building, i put my ciggie out but then i was looking for a bin to put the dogend in, but due to security there wasn't any bins. the guy who was brushing the street said just throw it on the floor maam. i have just booked to go back to new york for a few days in feb so i will see how things are when i get there.
cheers

we have no problem with people that smoke but! hate it when you are allocated a table in a restaurant next to people that are more or less finished their meals then decide to light up without any feelings for the people that are just starting a meal.
in our part of the world smoking bans have been in position in most public buildings etc for a while now and a complete ban takes place within edinburgh airport very soon

we've had a smoking ban in ireland for almost 2 years now, it applies in all places of work, that includes all pubs and restaurants. it didn't take long to get used to and works very well now. but in saying that all the irish want to do when we go on holiday is to liight up in the pubs just cos we can so i don't know about it working

Lets all watch and wait, and see how the laws are interpreted locally. I can see it will be a good opotunity for a money spinner like parking fines!
