Over the years Ive done the donkey work, and usually come up with the same answer. Email-car-hire, but www.travelsupermarket.com does a great search for you. Great for flights, cars, insurance etc.

I booked with the people Libbyo recommended and they were the cheapest and simplest I could find. Fingers crossed the service is good when we come over and then they will be 10 out of 10.

Hello All

I am visiting PDI for a week in late feb and I was hoping to hire a car out there. I havent visited the island before and have had various experiences with car hire companies on the other Canary island.

I would be grateful if anyone has any recommendations or places to steer clear of!

Thanks

:thankyou:

I nearly always use E-mail car hire at the airport, they are an agent for Record rent a car. Although not neccessarily the cheapest their cars are very new with all the toys. Autoreisen at the airport are very good too! Can't comment on downside of this topic as I've never had a bad car whilst in G. Canaria !

I have used e mail rent a car many times without any problems at all, The desk is 2 minutes from baggage collection so very quick and easy, They will offer you additional insurance when you collect the car which is worth it because you will then be fully covered for everything which is always a good idea when driving in a foreign country and it doesnt cost very much more either!

Here is the link if you want to check em out

I almost always use email car hire, if I dont use them I use an alternative company which also use Record car hire. Record is fantastic. I have had two problems with the cars over several years.

1. It broke down in Vecendario. I ran the company as stated. I was collected by pickup truck, driven back to the airport office and immediatly issued with a replacement. PROBLEM SOLVED.

2. I wanted to extend my hire period. I rang them. I discovered that to extend yoy must return on or before your apointed return time to the airport for a reissue of paperwork. A PAIN, BUT NO PROBLEM

So there you go. Record car hire are great and usually email car hire rents record cars to you at the very best prices.

Hi

Anyone offer me some advice on a cheap car hire for my visit in Septmeber to PR?

Can get a very good bargain at a place called TopCar AutoReisen (in Playa)but it seems a bit 'too cheap' if you know what I mean, and am worried about getting striped up on my credit card once I take the thing back!

Any suggestions welcomed.

I have used recordrentacar for the last 4 years they are pretty reasonable and you can pick up and drop off at the airport, they do charge 30 euros though if it is after midnight, but we have never had a problem with them at all.

Hi Nik,

I used AutoReisen from the airport in May. 3 weeks in a brand new car for very good rates.

No problems at all. Far better rate this year than Record:have-fun:

we are not arriving until after midnight this year we have had to pay the 30euros to do after hours pick up but there is someone from record rentacar that waits for you to arrive of the plane the after hours are between 23.00 hours and up to the point when the sales desk opens. we have arrived about 2.0am in previous years and there was always someone there to meet us, going back as well was early so we just pushed the keys in the box on the desk

I've used both Autoreisen, and Record (via e-mail car hire) over the years and found them both excellent with newish well maintained vehicles. I've also used them both at all hours of the day, Autoreisen charge 20 euros whilst Record charge 30 euros for their out of hours service. Their online booking service is simple and easy to use. You only part with your money via credit card at the time of collecting your vehicle. Unlike some other countries there are no nasty suprises to come home to when your card statement arrives. !!!

Coming over to Puerto Rico 8th March and want to hire a car picking up and dropping off at the airport.
I dont have a credit card which hasnt been a problem in the past, weve just gone into a car hire company in resort and used my partners credit card which they were happy with.
But now we want to pick up at the airport, we want to book in advance via the car hire companies website, but they all say the credit card must be in the named drivers name. My partner cant drive so she cant book it.
I have made a reservation with AutoReisen who require payment with credit card upon arrival but I dont know whether or not they will accept my partners credit card with me being the named driver? I am just hoping they are the same as the ones in resort who dont mind.
Does anyone know if they will accept this?
Thanks

I've never had a problem picking up a car at the airport and I too have no credit card. Always book the car in my name and pay it with the wife's card.
Have used Autoreisen as well. On one occassion their machine (Record rent a car) did'nt accept the wife's card/s, I offered my Visa debit card which they duly accepted. Although the wife drives over here she's very reluctant over there but I often put her down as a second driver !!

Going back to Puerto Rico on the 21st April. Last time our transfers were included this time they are not! There are 4 of us going and my boyfriend is 24 and drives. Is it best to arrange a rental car before we go or in the airport when we get there?? From what i can remember its far enough to PR from airport but i thought it'd maybe be better to rent a car for the week! Just wondering how much it'll be and what he'll need to bring etc etc.

We're staying in the Peurto Azul so it is quite high up a steep hill so car maybe would be best option!

Any Help greatly appreciated

We are going to Puerto Rico on the 9th for 8 days and have hired a car from Recordrentacar the total cost for the 8 days is £148.00 (it would have been a bit cheaper if the euro was not so low at the moment). there are cheaper cars that you could get for less than a £100 I would presume as the one we have hired is a Berlingo with is not the cheapest.

This was picking up at the airport as they have a desk there.

Just read your second post and i do believe you have to be 25 and over to drive the rental cars but you could check their website, we did get a car from Avis years ago that did allow my daughter to drive before she was 25 for an extra cost but the hidden costs that we recieved when we got home was criminal never used them again.

Email/Record car hire have made changes to the way you collect your car at Las Palmas airport. You no longer go straight to the car hire desks for vehicle collections, you have to find their "rep" in the arrivals hall (terminal A).Then you are transported by a courtesy vehicle for a 5 minute transfer to their new offices, from their you collect your vehicle with new instructions for vehicle return procedure. This to me seems to overcomplicate things as I was well happy with their former set up. Looks like I'll use another company in future.

Terry L
19th April 2008, 04:27 PM
I booked with record and they sent me an email about this. So what exactly do you do on returning the car? I take it they drop you to the terminal after returning it.

19th April 2008, 05:50 PM
Sorry Terry L have'nt actually used this new service, when I recieved the e-mail I cancelled my booking with e-mail/Record and re-booked with Topcar Autoreisen. Having used both companys many times in the past either were both very good with e-mail/Record generally having the nicer cars. Personally I see no need for change with e-mail/Record, I just want to get the car as quickly as possible and head off down to my resort. After travelling all day last thing I want to do is hang around for a transfer to their new premises, so it's e-mail/Record no more for me !!!!!!!

I presume that they have moved to the new location to cut costs. Airport locations tend to be expensive. Maybe they will be able to pass some of the savings on to their customers. A five minute trip down the road would not trouble me too much. I too have used both Record and Auto Reisen and was very pleased with both...good cars and pleasant service.

That 5 mins could well turn into 50 mins when waiting for others. When you arrive on the island in the early hours (as I will be) it's the difference between catching those first couple of drinks or going straight to bed. Obviously depends on flights being ontime too !!!!!!

I used a Hire car company last November that had an office offsite.

Never again!!!

We had to wait at the airport until they had enough people for the bus. After numerous phone calls asking when the bus would be there it arrived 45 minutes later:angryfire:, then it was about a 10 minute drive to the office.

It then took about 40 minutes for all the paper work to be done as they only had 2 staff on but 6 lots of people hiring cars.

All in all we were about 2 hours hanging about and because of the time of arrival we had missed the supermarkets being open in Mogan :veryangry:.

On the return we decided to drop the car off early so we could check in early.
Same again we had to wait for enough people to fill the bus up, in the end we were the last to check in for our plane.

Back again to Mogan in June :tinysmile_fatgrin_t but this time jumping straight into a Taxi at the airport so we will be in our accomodation about 40 mins after leaving airport

andyha
20th April 2008, 07:22 PM
My wife has just reminded me the car company was Alamo and she made the first phone call to them when at the airport at 19.25hrs and after all I mentioned above we finally got to Mogan at 23.30hrs.
So would definately not use again

coolcreen
27th May 2008, 01:58 AM
I am led to believe that the reason why car hire companies prefer/insist on Credit cards over Debit cards is that the holders credit rating has been checked to some extent. If, for example, you damage the underbody of the vehicle on off-the-road terrain, the insurance will not cover it. The damage can be recovered from your Credit Card account, but could not be recovered from you Debit Card account if there was no money in it.

Some of the smaller operaters in the resorts will gladly accept cash transactions, but, the daily rate will be greater.

Try hiring a car in the UK or any other country, you will encounter similar difficulties.

viv

I travel to G.C. at least once a month. Use a car hire every time. Here is some of my expeirieces. Having put up with problems of our U.K. airports to get out here. No way do I want to be picked up by a carhire company to be taken some other place for my car, when there are hire companies at the airport. What happens when I need to return my car for a 6-am flight. So much for Record. Economy cars is a carhire company middleman based in Greece. They charge £2 from your card for a booking. When I found out today that the conformation was Record I cancelled and lost £2. Topcar I find are the most competative. But when as in my case you collect the car and are informed that it is half full of petrol but have signed for it before you get in it. Then when you get in it find it is less than a quarter full remember, if you dont go back and rectify or make up the loss you will have monies docked off your card. Debit or Credit cards I find are no problem. At the desk they will take whatever you offer.:blue:

as tony says............. but remember if you use your paper licence then you need to have your passport with you as photographic proof just in case you are ever stopped by the police.

Also, we are only in PR for a week and will hire a car for max two days. As I don't want to drive straight out of the car hire place into busy traffic, (1st time driving abroad) is there a good hire company on a quiet part of town? And would it be better to pick it up during the evening?

After 20 years of using different car hire companies out of Las Palmas with no problems and clear terms / conditions. I came up with Easycar the agency and Goldcar.
On arrival at LPA Goldcar had no record of my booking saying its common with Easycar. To cut along story short, ended up paying 3 x as much and having alot of hassle getting some money refunded from Easycar.
Beware of Goldcar they charge you for a full tank of fuel and do not refund even if you return the car full.
Stick with the old regular angencies like Auto Europe, Carjet etc., and the established rental companies like, Record, Cicar etc.,
You have been warned!!

I do look on line at prices, but then you do hear so many stories that theyve(or someones) had your money, theyve had the money and there is no booking/no cars available, they wont hand back the deposit (like easy jet car hire on watchdog),cars are unroad worthy, they want you to leave your credit card details, extra charges, its a bit of a mine field.

Ive hired cars abroad, and so far touch wood ive had no probs (only trumpted up policia charges). I usually book through the a travelagent not always the one where ive paid for the holiday, its definately worth getting quotes from each.

I went to Thomson,Thomas cook and First choice in town, asking for the cheapest hire car. They all it seams use the same system to search for hire cars/companys all three print outs were indentical just the total prices varied on each one, sames dates each suggested Avis rental a corsa sized car, pickingit up from playa de ingles.First choice were £60 for the week an offer of pay for five days get the 2days free to Thomsons staggering £176 for 7days hire.

I picked the car up from Avis, you got a taxi to the hire place got a receipt from the driver and Avis reimburse you there and then, the same when you return it. The cars were immaculate inside and out seemingly all new polos. They had all your paper work ready for you arrival, all they asked for was a deposit for the petrol which you got back on its return with a full tank.

Weve been out to Gran canaria maybe 10times and on some hoilday pacakages the transfers are free, but when the transfers are £25 pp its cheaper to hire a car , and have a week or so driving/freedom. And the petrols cheap, we went to a garage in Maspolomas and the old guy pumping the petrol had a fag on now that was scarry.

Wish I'd read this earlier-I have just booked with Europcar ( Goldcar) for the week! It was only £110 for a people carrier for 7 days! I dont mind paying for the fuel as we will use it all-aslomg as they dont try and charge over the odds for it.

After a lot of research into the best car hire prices on the internet I found www.carhire3000.com (http://www.carhire3000.com) was by far the best.

They are agents for Europcar and you simply report to the Europcar desk at the Airport and collect your car with a considerable discount.

I currently have a Fiat Brava for 14 days at a cost of £181.04 and no hidden extras.

Delboy, you got a good deal at £184 for 2 weeks. I tried the same company just now for car hire for the next two weeks and got a quote for a Fiat Punto for £268.94....big difference. Lady luck must be on your side. Best quote I could get for the same car (Fiat Punto) with the same dates was http://www.goldcar.es/en/ at £187. This is one to consider also, they have an office at Las Palmas airport, and, looking at their terms and conditions, it would appear that you are comprehensively insured without any excess. You normally have to pay about €4 per day to cover this excess. Do not take this for granted. Read the terms and conditions yourselves.

Message for Coolcreen...... We seem to think alike when it comes to getting value for money these days, after all that is what the internet is all about.

I am coming back to GC in four weeks for 20 days and have already hired a 4 door Seat Ibiza or similar for £255.65, mind you I booked and paid for that on 3 November 2008, so prices may have changed down.

I forgot to mention that when I arrived 13 days ago, Europcar did give me an upgrade to a Fiat Bravo without me asking, so that is really where I have got the bargain I presume. However, I do prefer the smaller cars because they are easier to park in these busy tourist hotspots.

I had checked out other websites, in fact one of them required me to take a taxi from the airport to collect the car, which I thought was a bit of a hassle and car return could have been worse.

Europcar are a well known car hire group and are located at the Airport which is what made me take the decision to use them. I will continue to use www.carhire3000.com and hope to get another upgrade if I'm lucky.

Don't forget to put out your milk bottles.....

Heading over on Saturday, and note that Top Car / Auto Reisen are offering a Yaris for EUR€95(about GBP£90 these days) for seven days incluing insurance, one driver, with about another €20 for a second driver. Have hired from them twice before at the Airport, no problems either time.

I imagine there's probably excess on top of that, but still, not bad compared to airport taxis if you're only going for a week and you're heading to the deep south!

coolcreen

www.goldcar.es/en (http://www.goldcar.es/en) present rate for a Toyota Yaris is €104 for one week. From my understanding of the Terms and conditions, no excess applies. Insurance does not cover your personal items. Additional driver is €2 per day up to a maximum of €10. One week car hire including 2nd driver should cost you €114. All of the above in my opinion, read the small print yourself.

This is who I use:- www.topcarautoreisen.com (http://www.topcarautoreisen.com)
Have used these over the last couple of years without any problem. Last trip last month, car developed a "missing" kind of sympton. Phoned them, returned the car to the airport and was immediately given a replacement with a free upgrade, first class service !!

Have'nt used them since they moved "off" airport. What I know is you have to take a free taxi from outside the arrivals hall up to an industrial estate a couple of junctions up the motorway to collect your car. I understand that you return the car to the airport when leaving. Personally I can't be asked doing that to save a few euros. I just want to pick up the car as soon as possible and get down South to enjoy my hols, especially after travelling all day !!!!!!!!!!

Email-car-hire are one of the online agents for "Record", as from May of last year the Record operation have moved "off airport". Their website homepage still advertises as "On" airport although the information link on their site no longer loads. Siobh the thread starter here has asked for information for car hire direct from the airport. If in fact Record have located back onto the airport this year I'de be very interested to know as they always provided a first class service.

I have used www.doyouspain.com (http://www.doyouspain.com) quite a few times both on the mainland and the Canary Islands - predominantly Tenerife and GC and haven't been able to beat their prices. They are a broker so use Record plus others, although I have to say that last September they booked me with Record in Tenerife and their service and cars were crap, they had moved off airport and didn't have the usual 24hour coverage. Car was a really badly beaten up Megane that had seen better days but drove ok. If I use doyouspain again and they come up with Record I will ask them to re-book with someone else.

Which is the best place to go for car hire - either on line before coming over or booking for a few days once you are here

Have used holidayautos.co.uk for years. Never had a problem and as far as I can see, the cheapest in town. No extra charge for a pick up at the airport and a drop in downtown Porto Rico.
Never let me down.

My question is where do I pick the car up? This is the address and I shall be getting the bus from Playa Taurito...is it easy enough to find?

As far as I know it varies, from the airport it is 21 but some places in resort you have to be 25.

We are coming back for our anual holiday in GC at the end of April. This will be the first time we will be hiring a car for the entire trip from LPA. I have noted all the recomendations on this topic but have also taken a look at some review sites, All the companys recomended in this thread have good and some have very bad reviews.
I just want hassel free car hire from LPA for our holiday. I have tried Owens company but for some reason there are no cars of any class available for our stay (28/4 to 9/5).
So I'm going to ask all you wonderful forum members.
Has anyone hired a car recently ie 2010 from LPA, if so could you please let me Know what Company you used, and what sort of price you paid. I just want to get a car and not find any nasty supprises waiting for me when I get off the plane.
I would really appriciate some help on this one.
Many Thanks Andy

Hi all,

I am moving back to GC in a few weeks and think it would be beneficial to get a long term car hire. Just wondering if anyone has done this or knows or any companies that offer this for a reasonable price?

Thanks

I know of a German who rents for 4 months each year and gets a rather good deal from Record. He does however have to take it in increments of one month at a time. He therefore has to go to the airport every month to re-hire it as the computer system cannot handle a greater length of time. For long-term rental, I would approach some of the smaller local operators and do a deal with them. I would recommend the small car hire operation just above the Post Office in Puerto Rico (sorry, cant remember the name) They speak good English and have always been very fair to us. Don't know if they do long rentals however. Since it is long-term rental, you are a very attractive customer and should be able to do a good deal.
Perhaps you may also speak to Owen. the provider of this site as he does car hire along with a host of other services. Send private message to him at http://www.canaryforum.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=1

Hi Mary,
We meet again!. Mary we have booked for next year at Playa Taurito,The car hire people you recommend ,do they do full cover as in Super cover for Insurance.
It tends to get a little confusing when you read terms etc from most Car Hire people.
I.E. windscreen, tyres, underneath not included and excess of about €500.

Puerto Mogan - there used to be Formula 1 car hire - not sure if its still there - just past orillas del Mar
Puerto Rico - Avis Hertz and then there are the smaller car hire place - one next door to us at the clinic Jure car
Niza car hire near La parada
Mencey - on the road behind the clinic are the ones i can think of off the top of my head. Cant think of any other at the mo'. Usually about 35 euros a day but pick up from airport maybe cheaper.

19th August 2011, 08:37 AM
I know this thread was started some years ago but I just thought I would add 'my bit' to at least make me feel better. I have just returned from an 8 day break 'high up' above Amadores and during the stay rented a car for the whole time; picking up and dropping off at the airport.

Part of the deal (Goldcar through Car Hire 3000) was the scam that is pre-paid fuel! You know, pay for a full tank then return the vehicle empty!! (yeah right - using a tow truck?). Anyway, I got charged 62.83 Euros, plus 13% tax totalling 70.99 Euros for the fuel and the car I hired was a Peugout 207. So, whilst there, I did a bit of research. The fuel tank capacity of a Peugout 207 is 50 Litres. The cost of a litre of unleaded whilst I was visiting was 1.018 Euros a litre. Now, Maths was never my strong point (Grade 2 CSE! - yes, shows my age and innumeracy!), but 50 multiplied by 1.018 comes to 50.90 Euros; some 20 Euros more than Goldcar charged me! What a rip off!

I have emailed them and received the standard 'you signed the contract' reply. Just don't understand how they can get away with it really.

Anyway, rant over.

coolcreen
19th August 2011, 10:42 AM
But if you dont sign the contract, you dont get the car. Only use car hire companies that will allow you return the car with the same amount of fuel as was in the tank when you collected it. For short durations, we always use the car hire company next door to the Post Office in Puerto. Usually get it for €30 per day, low season €25 per day and peak season (Christmas and Easter) as high as €35 per day, No excesses, No Credit card requirement, No hidden clauses, Just pay your money by whatever means and bring the car back with the same amount of fuel, that's it, very pleasant service, never a problem. Car is usually Renault Clio, Citroen C3 or Peugeot 207, all with air-con. For longer durations, we pick up at the airport, but will never choose a company that provides a full tank and ask you to pay for it (at crazy prices) For that reason, I will never use GoldCar, except for car hire of 3 days or less when this requirement does not apply. ALWAYS READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS CAREFULLY if you do not want surprises.
